Ouch, the inline quoting makes for too much hazzle to reply.

    Wrong thread anyways I suppose.

    Back to watching football!

This makes sure that the one day flies aren't the ones competing against each other. They've already proven themselves in the groups.

Each match in the group is good for 3, (a win) 1 (a tie) or 0 (a lose) points for each team.

At the end of the 3 matches that each team plays in the group the 2 teams with the most points in the group go on to the quarter finals.

If two teams have an equal amount of points then the amount of goals scored during the matches also comes into play to decide the group winners.

Ok I think I understand a bit better now the "Group Play is sorta like a double elimination bracket...

    Thanks gents

Yeah. My bad, Birnando. If I could just start typing between QUOTE unQUOTE and have the post make distinction between my input and the quoted input, I would have done it that way.

Who would have ever thought that we would have seen Australia be on such even footing with the #1 ranked team in the world?? Good game so far.

To be sure, Australia is missing Cahill. Particularly on set pieces. It was kind of nice to see Spain put one in the back of the net, cheeky though it was and rooting for Australia as I am.

    Yep, that is correct.
Just a slight correction on LX's excellent description of how it works.
It is 16 teams, not 8, that goes thru to the knock out stages.
So it is 1/8 finals that kicks of elimination in the WC

That is the furthest Norway has ever gone in the cup.
Back in 98 after beating Brasil 2-1 in Marseille.
After that we haven't even qualified
Oh boy, did we party and celebrate that victory!!!

Ah sorry. I'm not much of a football fan myself.

What annoys me to no end is the fact that they all hit the floor and roll around crying from pain whenever something happens, and as soon as the ref has made a decision, they're right as rain again. Simulating should be punished hard.

Oh and the other fact that annoys me is that they still don't use video assistance for the ref, leading to some extremely unfortunate decision that everyone except the ref knew was dead wrong. Belgium got shafted in the 2002 world championship quarter finals. But this is all thank to Sepp Blatter who rigs his own election to keep the high seat.

I agree. If memory serves me correctly Bosnia got the shaft in this cup, too.

As for the injuries, I joked around with co-workers that the medical box they bring out probably has a sandwich and chips in it, not even 2 days later a player rolls and hold his knee in pain... med staff RUNS out to help. What did I see? Dude breaks open the cooler and gives him a water. Right as rain after that. And, don't get me started on this "magic spray" they have. Rinse and repeat as before. In fact, one gent at work counts the rolls out loud when someone goes down... 1 ... 2.... 3 ... 3 rolls ya wanker! LMAO!

Video Assistance=Replay, which is code for more commercial time. It is after all a game, so what's the difference? The stadiums will still be abandoned in a month while many Brazilians starve.

Replay - An equivalent human looks at a video that the guy on the field saw? Replays are for sore losers, problem is someone still loses, and someone is still sore. The pap that the broadcasters (here's another beneficiary of replay delays) say "get it right" is self-serving at best, just prolongs the air time of what may at one time been a pleasurable diversion.

I am eagerly awaiting Uruguay vs Italy today.
And I also hope to see England deliver a better performance than they gave in the previous two matches.

With any luck Uruguay will outplay Italy and send them packing after the group stages.
The inventors of all that is bad in football*, Italy, is very much THE team to "hate" in my book.
    Pirlo or not

*Match fixing, doping, life threatening 3-second injuries and the world record in gallons of hair-gel on a pitch simultaneously.
