If I may be a bit frank for a second.
Hockey, baseball and American football were messed up to something other than sports years and years ago.
They are pretty much as rigged as that abomination you call wrestling.
Happily though, they have come up with innings, time-outs and quarters so that the sponsors can get the most out of the commercials..

Now football is not yet all that popular in the US.
And I for one hope it stays that way.
That way the sport can remain a sport where there is 2*45 minutes of sports.
No time-outs, no players standing idle while waiting for Coca Cola et all to finish their important messages.
If the Americans ever gets influence in that sport, it will be 4 by 12 minutes of parading that will take 3-4 hours to complete.

So, here's hoping the US team places fourth in their group...
(I know, I know, the worst they can get after yesterday's game is third..)

They are still in group play, Glen.
These championships consists of two parts.
A group play followed by a knock-out stage.

Basically the group stage is the series leading up to the REAL playoffs.

The quarter-finale (8 teams), half-finale (4 teams) and finale (the final two).

This makes sure that the one day flies aren't the ones competing against each other. They've already proven themselves in the groups.

Each match in the group is good for 3, (a win) 1 (a tie) or 0 (a lose) points for each team.

At the end of the 3 matches that each team plays in the group the 2 teams with the most points in the group go on to the quarter finals.

If two teams have an equal amount of points then the amount of goals scored during the matches also comes into play to decide the group winners.

Also...these teams don't play "regular seasons" because it's just the countries national teams. There's not real "league" for that. So the group fase is kind of a replacement for the regular season.

Oh, on Müller: I wonder how he is after that nasty end of game bang up. That looked bad.
Yea, I had posted that prior to the match. The last play most certainly looked bad for Müller but I can't seem to find anything regarding an update as of this post. The Ghana player made it look like Müller dislocated his shoulder.

I'll have to keep an eye out for the S. American style of futbol you mentioned. Thanks for the heads up.

You know, I never thought about it that way. Its kind of a romantic way of looking at it really when you think about it... dividing the worlds culture away from North American culture lol!

I am sure there is some truth to it... I bet Canadians hate being lumpped into that though lol!!

    Your cynicism is amusing
They are pretty much as rigged as that abomination you call wrestling.
Yes. "Wrestling" as seen on TV is called entertainment. Usually for male adolescents in this country. It's like soap operas with testoserone, ladders, chairs, a ring and hot chicks.

However, high school, collegiate and olympic wrestling is widespread. And we're good at it. Check out how many US MMA pros and amateurs have wrestling in their background. Oh, and we're good at that too.

Actually, it is getting very popular. Half or more of the academies and trainers are bringing in their staff from overseas. Primarily, UK. Competition in the travel outfits is extremely fierce and we constantly have MLS jr outfits scouting and recruiting. Mainly, Red Bulls (MLS) for our area. Oh, and don't get me started on the girl's football teams.

I've always wondered why I can't seem to find any other country where girls soccer is as widespread as the US of A. It goes right from 4yrs old to as high as you can take it if you've got the talent. We need a WMLS! There, I said it.

And I for one hope it stays that way.
Rugby is the real underground sport here, as far as I can tell. 7s or 15s, both.

Our advertising has a long way to go to catch up to international footie. Look how much advertising is already going on. It's world-wide football that started the trend of slapping a sponsor's name on every piece of a player's kit. Well, jerseys, at least.
So, here's hoping the US team places fourth in their group...

See inline bold and USA! USA! USA!

He got a cut just above the eyebrow and got stitched up. But he'll be fine to play. Nothing too serious. (reading the German FiFA news)

Injuries are the unfortunate side of playing in world class football. There's been a few and I don't like seeing teams be beaten as a result.

It's a fact of life in the game, though. It has one major upside: It draws the substance and quality of a team to the top.
