Well, my friends... it looks like I've taken over this thread. I know I didn't but I am enjoying the debate the "to wear or not to wear" this garment is capable of starting... But being not of celtic origin, I do have to ask. And I thank you all for the aswers. I guess it all boils down to the argument: "it's a piece of clothing! Wear it or not, don't care what others think!" And boy, are you right! I guess we, the portuguese, tend to be a bit self-conscious and insecure.

I am happy to tell you that I just might be aiming to buy a kilt. I think I'll keep away from the tartan kilts and go for something black or other solid colour. Tartans are sometimes generic, but I don't want to wear someone's family tartan as a fashion statment. Nor would I like someone to wear my own family crest on a ring just for fun... Some things are meant to be respected. So I looked to some generic tartans (like black watch tartan) and none of them were realy my cup of tea. But I must say... there are families that you just want to be a part of just to wear the tartan! There are some really elegant and striking tartans. I envy you...

So... I've been thinking of the occasions that might be suited for a kilt. I want one but not just to wear around the house. So this is what I came up: being confy at home; hiking; playing golf! This last one is just too simple... Golf! I play golf... golf is a scotish game! So... KILT ON and TEE OFF!

I'm going to buy me a KILT! Hurra!

    Cheers!

I can see where you are coming from on this and I respect your decision. I wouldnt mind someone wearing my family tartan for the most part, but like you I wouldnt wear anyone elses family crest. Its a mark of respect.

I think you've got exactly the gist of what I meant. I hope your kilt brings you much luck in your golfing days.

I'm of Italian ancestry and I've never considered wearing or not wearing kilts. It simply never crossed my mind. I do see people now and then in kilts and I don't think I think anything about it, until today.

I saw a catalog for a Swedish manufacturer of workclothes wwww.blaklader.com Whilst flipping through the catalog I saw their ""Glasgow Kilt" Glasgow Kilt :: Blaklader Catalog :: Blaklader Workwear :: Functional Well-Designed Swedish Workwear

I saw this picture and I think I'd wear this thing:

Hey Icedog! See! Now it's in you too! The urge to go pantless but kiltful! If you post a picture of Basil or Mr. Toes in a kilt I'm sure to buy me one! and that means that you also have too... In fact, folks... why not institute the Kilt as a SRP uniform? We're real men! Real men shave with straights! Real men wear kilts! ARGH!

Seriously now... I came up with another personal argument for kilt wearing: my brother went to Senegal last Summer (alone, backpacking for 3 weeks... my hero! ) and after that he satrted wearing trousers he bought there wiyh those waky african bright coloured patterns... and he wears them all the time! Not to class, sure, but he wears them... and he isn't african! So... why not? I guess respect for ancestry is important, but there should be no restraint to using a garment from another culture. So... I, for one, and thanks to you (especially the folks from Scotland and Wales, legal kilt wearers... ), am convinced. Now it all boils down to cash! And having the guts to wear the kilt in public... but if I buy one that is cheap I won't regret it, I guess...

    Take care!

Hope you enjoyed the Monthy Pithon scketch...

Got my Utilikilt yesterday and have worn it since and my conclusion is : GREAT!

It lives up to the hype!

I went for the regular in Olive. I did consider the survival, but "cheaped out" in last minute. I'm certain the survival is worth the extra money though.

I followed their guide on measurements and it's a perfect fit! I don't think I have any other garment with such a great fit!

You can feel the quality! The material is heavy and feels like it will handle tough wear! This is a great item and very well sewn. Everything seems thought through.

The only thing I have to complain about is $50 international shipping! USPS $18.65 in a sealed standard plastic envelope/bag! That is a rip-off!

It's "Freedom"! You won't regret getting one!

nice, utilikilts are a lot of fun. but beware, the snaps are fragile and can easily tear the fabric if you yank on it.

I wore my cilt today to the Eisteddfod. It is an annual festival of Welsh culture. What was slightly embarassing was that I was the only Welshman there in a cilt. What was not at all embarassing was the attention, smiles & compliments. What made my head really swell was the three people who wanted to take a picture. That two of them were photographers from the national & local newspapers proves that real Celts do wear cilts

I will post the pics when I get hold of them.
