I saw a german guy on you tube once that had a very extensive collection of Meerchaums. He said that he drove himself crazy smoking with white gloves on and other bothersome practices. One of his pipes looked very deeply colored and he laughed that the best result came from just enjoying the pipe and not caring about the finish. One thing I remembered about Meerchaums was cake should not be allowed to build up in your bowl. It will crack it at some point.

Not worth it to me, but here is the stuff I read in the book 30 years ago. Not everyone agrees with all he has to say in the book ....... including me, but he explains the rational behind protecting the meerschaum.

Well if you have the patience to watch a 30 minute video on the guy I was talking about. Here is his take and experiences with Meerchaum pipes. I myself have one that was gifted to me from my father along time ago and I do enjoy smoking it from time to time. Never given much thought about care until I started using it but so far so good.

I do not wear cloth. Afterall it is just a pipe, a tool that was made to deliver you a decent tobacco smokes.
There seems to be a brownish spot on the shank. It is a place i guess i usually keep my finger.

I remember having a couple of meerschaum pipes back in the mid '90s. The aforementioned book made me curious. One was a modestly priced billiard, the other a more expensive hand carved block from Turkey, an eagle adorning the bowl with it's wings partially spread. I did the cloth thing for awhile, blew smoke on the outside of the bowl. Neither of them colored much, and I just didn't find the flavor any better than a briar.

IIRC I gave the billiard to a friend, the eagle's wing broke off on one side and I gave that one up and just stuck with the briars since. Now this topic has me curious again ......... perhaps another try at a meer is on the horizon .......

I haven't smoked much lately let alone my Gaudy Bacchus but I am waiting for a friend to get his s##t together to go check my bees. Using my new honey extractor for a pipe stand.

I can't upload a picture for some reason lately... Sorry

Pipe by the city castle today. Capstan blue from Neerup.

Actually we went watching the medieval combat weekend and to support our local horse team (Rohan) of course. Pardon, of topic.

Thanks for all the meerschaum advice, gents, I really appreciate it. Still loving the bowl. I'm finding I tend to hold the shank when I'm smoking with it more than I do with the briar bowls as it gets a bit hotter to touch. Being a falcon bowl it can be rotated on the stem, so i don't think I'll be touching the same spot all the time so not sure what'll happen there. I'm thinking I won't bother with gloves or a cloth or whatever and just see how it turns out. If I had a really expensive eagle shaped one for £200 or something I might think differently, but this one was £38.
