Tell me about this black bread

Well, wouldn't put even my enemy to sleep in the shed Might be most interesting, yet deep-freezing experience at winter.

Åland black bread is almost like everyday common rye bread, but the taste is sweet. The taste comes from the special syrup they make there. It's a mellow stuff and delicious, specially when fresh baked.
We do not get a change to get it fresh too often, but every now and then Åland fishermen sell it from their boats.

County of Åland (and because we're bilinguals it's Ahvenanmaa in Finnish ~ 'country of the perch') is an autonomic county and a group of islands between Finland and Sweden. Beautiful place; very popular for those who are interested in fishing, wreck diving, bird watching or just place with not too much folks around.
No bridges from the continent to Åland. You need to take a ship from my home town or Stockholm Sweden to get there.

Years ago, I used to be able to get a dark rye or black bread (Not sure which it was now) that was really nice. I haven't been able to find anything like it since.
Just looking at your pictures Tomi and saying to my own wifey, "I need to get out and visit some other cultures. Could you just imagine how pleasant it would be to be at the counter of the salmon place there and smelling that delicious fish?!" However, after seeing the "snow bunnies" as Steph put it, I think wifey may have to stay behind.

I know the feeling As someone who serves in the Navy, and formerly in the Army, wifey doesn't/didn't look too happy whenever i said we 'had to stay' for a day or two in some other harbor or base. Or serve in another city or deployment.
Not so much these days as i'm getting too old for that kind of things. And because it's a gentleman site, i close my mouth with this...

What it comes to another cultures i think it's been a privilege to see how things are in other countries. Not just on vacations but at work as well. Basically we're not that different at all, imho. All you need to do is to throw away your prejudices and fears without being too blue eyed. It's a great world out there. Seeing things somewhere else sometimes makes you appreciate your own country or see thing in another unexpected way.

Few years ago we had a guest from France as a part of the student exchange program, Melanie was her name. While taking her & my daughter to a short walk into nearby forest with our dogs she became very scared, almost went into panic as she was afraid we're going to get lost forever. In an island? We really had to use time to explain that you haven't seen any forests yet, nor ever will be in southern Finland. Or how she kept eating Finnish chocolate; at least 10 plates day although we tried to tell her that you do not have to eat them all; there's plenty of more in the local shop. Or when she went to sauna with our daughter, the amount of screaming at low temps was pain to our ears.

I've seen most of the EU countries and few others as well. Tchad, Somalia, Tunis, Lebanon, Kosova, Bosnia-Hertzegovina, Arab Emirates. Some at vacation, some at deployments. What i'd like to see are Germany, Austria, USA (specially Alaska), Canada, New Zealand and for the reason i can't explain: Patagonia/Tierra del Fuego (Chile), and the last but not least: Isle of man during TT. Maybe some day as soon as i find out how not to lose money

Howevers, i've enjoyed mostly my vacations in eastern Europe. Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland. Got some family friends there too. Crete was also great, must be because our kids were young and it was so nice to see them enjoy that place so much. Crete is not so much tourist minded but they are proud folks aware of their history and i very much like that.

Whatever everyday place there is, it's exotic to someone else. Listening to Japanese, German, Russian and whatever tourists and their talks makes us smile usually. Snow, moose, forests, women & men going to sauna together, really? What about something exotic? It would be the same when i'm visiting somewhere else.

Hearth and Home Stogie in a Whitehall Grand National. These cool evenings are wonderful for sitting on the lanai and having a smoke. My long standing flirtation with cigars may be winding down. Yes, I still like them but pipe tobacco is just a little more to my liking, not to mention a bit more affordable and less hassle to maintain.
The older I get, the better I was
