Agree that it is just plain rude to visit somewhere and not make an attempt at the language and customs. Only problem is, if you don't use it you lose it. I learnt a little French and German in school. Afterwards a smattering of Swahili, Bantu, Sioux Indian, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese and Spanish. Years later, i've lost most of it. Things sound familiar but trying to make sense is hard. Guess that means i need to get back to travelling more....

Even in my own family (Welsh), I have relatives that say they have no use for their native language, and can't speak much more than a few words of it anyway. The brain washing of the 'Welsh Not' has left a long lasting blemish, that is hard to get rid of. People still think that to get anywhere, they should only speak English, as Welsh is 'a backwards language'and 'inferior'.

Why does that bring the Two Ronnies back to mind so vividly??
    Sorry Mick, couldn't help myself.

All people here learn at least 1 or 2 (eng + russia/german/spanish) different languages + our mother languages (Fin/Swe).

I can see some difficulties too. Making one language as an 'official' European language might face some political resistance too.
Languages are difficult. Even in Finland there are folks who think we bilinguals who live in the coast are sort of a danger to the national identity, that we are rather Swedes than Finns. Swedish conquerors and whatever bs, although Swedish was our one and only official language for more than 600 years.
Personally i think they are idiots, but they have their rights to their opinions off course.

But as said, English probably will be the official EU language some day and that is the way it should go.
I think you are right about sensitivities and advantages for taking on a universal language. Not sure if you guys are aware of the attempts to construct "international auxiliary language" like Esperanto (constructed in 1887) to avoid the sensitivity and bias of using an existing language for international negotiations. I think it is an interesting concept. Not likely to succeed, but interesting.

Language is one of the few things that, if not used, the brain can and does erase. You literally can forget speech.

Now I think I might go and smoke my Peterson Churchwarden. I need to re-acqaint myself with that one I think. BK Cherry Cav as usual.

If the site was in German, I would struggle to say the very least. My hat is off to the non-native English speaking members. On a great day, my Spanish is marginal and Tagalog (Filipino) is passable but if the site were in either of those languages I doubt I could do as well as ETom or Sailor do on a daily basis in English.

    Good morning Gents!

Yesterday night I paid a visit to a pipe maker in my area, who is a colleague of the guy who plays the guitar in my band. It has been an amazing experience!
The pipe maker's name is Lucio Chiodo, anybody knows him? He makes pipes since 40 years, he told me he started when he was 14. We spent three hours together and he explained me a lot of details and techniques of his work, from lacquer production and use to briar preparation to mouthpiece making and so on...

At the end I went away with four pipes, that he kindly lent me to see which I prefer. Now I just need a hand in chosing my new pipe... Here is a picture:

The first is extremely elegant, the green one feels great in my hand, the longer one is impressively solid, and the blue one has wonderful colour tones... I just can't decide! Suggestions are welcome!

Also, if somebody likes these pipes and wants some pipe porn, I have a PPT file with many of his works. Ask for it in a private message and I'll send it to you! It's not a price list, just a lot of pics!

    Regards,
    Mauri

    Mauri,

Those are beautiful pipes. Whatever you choose, you can't go wrong.

    Anybody in Nuremberg(Nürnberg) this weekend???
I'll be there with my wife Saturday.
There are a lot of well-known exhibitors:
    Leatherman
    Cold Steel
    Marttiini
    Benelli
    Colt
    Zeiss
    from all over the world
If you still planning to come to Nuremberg, please give me a message!

IWA & OutdoorClassics - Welcome to IWA & OutdoorClassics
"40 years of the IWA & OutdoorClassics success story in Nuremberg
The national product show for the retail gun trade and gunsmiths opened its doors in Nuremberg for the first time in 1973 with just under 100 exhibitors. The international name IWA & OutdoorClassics is due to the rapidly increased importance beyond the borders of Germany and the multi-theme range of products, which covers the spectrum between traditional craftsmanship and innovative ideas for outdoor equipment, functional clothing, hunting sports and shooting sports. In the 40th year of its existence, IWA & OutdoorClassics 2013 presents a more attractive, more colourful and more comprehensive event that is a must for trade and industry."
