Oh ya heres the German Shepherd.. I use her coat hair to fend off the wildlife. This dog looks 'cute' but shes 85 lbs of all business. Dont step over the fence or come into the yard. I found her laying on my porch when she was a pup drinking the water outa the cats bowl when I walked outside. I think theres another thread for this. OK I'm done taking pics.
OK one more...

The vet confirmed she was a german shepherd shedder. Funny thing is shes stoic but terrified of the wild turkeys around here??!!!!???. She sees or hears a turkey and runs and lays down with her ears back.

I was gonna post the same thing. If you plant something in pre-treated with roundup, its not gonna do well. That stuff is good for weeds growing through concrete but thats it. Its oily and probably turned into your soil now. Get rid of it. I learned this years ago. Oil and plants/veggies do not mix. Do an experiment... Plant something in oily roundup and see what happens. Roundup = dead plants. Period

Thanked: 13246Killing the grass/top cover before turning the soil when first breaking ground is quite a common recommendation..
The Bayou Gardener - Index
I learned a ton from that forum and you can read about spraying the area first at the beginning of Spring then Turning/Discing/Tilling the ground once everything is dead..
It is however mentioned quite often that it takes least 1 year to condition the soil if not 2 before that same ground is ready for planting...
There are quite a few differences of opinion on that forum also, some belive that breaking the ground other than to put the starters in shouldn't be done and that planting should be "Low Impact" I guess it is all how you look at things..
Finally finished the fencing today or as Hirlau would put it "The Bambi Trap is now set"

Thanked: 2027Looks great Glen,Am sure you Know a Deer can Clear an 8 FT. Fence I had a similar setup back in the day,We were inundated with rabbits and Racoons and deer, for cheap you Can buy a Snapper transformer and run a wire that will electrify the entire fence.
You also have what looks like a large tree stump in the backround, looks like a perfect location for a machine gun turret
Gotta protect your crops man.CAUTION

Its raining pretty well here or i'd run out and post up some pics too.
On the other side of the coin, i use Round Up quite a bit all over my gardens. I find that it really only lasts a few days and then dissipates and things grow just fine again. I have not used it in the veggie gardens though since those are kept weed free with mulch and compost.-Dana

I looked at the same website that Glen has referenced a few posts up. I did look at a lot of different ways to prep the ground and chose this one. I was careful and bought the round up that is the one time kill and not the entire season weed preventer also. For me it was kill it now and not worry about a lot of weeds coming up this year, don't kill it and till it in and battle weeds, or not have a garden until next year.
I dislike weeding with a passion and I like fresh veggies, so I killed and then tilled.

Here's our first garden this year at this house. The first in twenty some years for us. We took a break for awhile.
