I have a pot on my balcony that has some chives growing in it. I don't think that qualifies as a garden though.

My wonderful neighbor, who I was going to borrow a tractor with a disk and a rototiller from, decided he needed something to do today and worked on my garden for me. I came home from clinicals today and the grass had been turned into garden. He had tilled twice, disked once, and tilled a third time. The first two tillings broke the sod, which I had sprayed with round up and killed, the disk then could do its job, and a third tilling for good measure.

One big step closer to having fresh veggies!

    Getting closer here too

We changed course just a little bit, after talking with my "Way too smart Neighbor: she explained that it would take a bit more work to convert the Ground soil to really good Garden soil.. So taking some advice from her and a bit of thought from me, I decided we would convert it over in the Fall let it sit over the Winter and start again next Spring..

So for this year, I added some soil booster to break up the deep clay, then I tilled the area, put down straw, as this feeds the earth worms Building some 4' x 8' Raised beds on top of the straw, filling them with a mix of Top Soil and Garden Soil... This will get us going for this year, and we can still move the starters out as planned on June 1st (weather permitting)..

So the plan is when Fall comes I will pull the Raised Wood Beds out, and spread the soil around the whole garden, probably add some manure at that time too.. That will sit under the snow until next Spring and then I will bring the Tiller back in and mix all that and drop it about 6 more inches.. I am hoping that will give us plenty of really good soil for a full Garden next year..

Posts are set for the Deer fence need to start building the sections as soon as the rain lets up again

Yep so we learned last year, she loves them so I am doomed... She actually has started thinking about having them separate in the future, so perhaps there is hope..

We are having a ton of fun and learning as we go, we are thinking that as it expands we will do the same routine each time we decide to add more area..
Next year we can move the beds out to the next section and the area from this year will be just open bedded garden...

This of course is all just a plan time will tell

Pool covers or other thick tarps are great to use a month before planting to keep the weeds from growing. Peel it away and you are good to plant. If you look around there are lots of people throwing them out as theyre opening their pools.
