That's still a mainline mvmt used commonly today. It's cheap and reliable and lasts forever. Now if you can find yourself an old Heuer Autavia (the first auto wind chronograph) then you would really have something.

It's still a nice watch though.

Price them, the old Val. ain't so cheap anymore. (and by cheap we mean inexpensive not cheap)

I mean a watch is a watch so how much can you modify things? if you go one way they say you imitate. If you go another it's too busy. If you go another it's ugly. If you go another it looks cheap. Another and it's too big or too small or too thick or too thin or it's too light or too heavy. So you have to navigate all that to make something folks like and will pay your price.

One outfit made a watch made from the rusted steel plates from the Titanic. They jumped on him saying he robbed a graveyard and disturbed all the spirits. Maybe someone's ancestor was part of the watch and the watch was ugly too.

Yup, that was one ugly watch,and people bought them! No accounting for taste..........

The idea is you dont know sh*t, if you dont know about Shinola. If your from Detroit area, you know that number 8 means 8 Mile Rd. Once you go past 8 Mile heading into the City, You are in the SH*T. Locked , cocked and ready for bear. You had better have topped off your gas tank before that point, otherwise your gonna get robbed and lose your watch and wallet.

Thank-you Sir. If I sounded raw, I apologize to all members. I dont buy a watch often. My everyday lasted 20 years..Bought this one because it takes a beating. Dress watches I dont buy often, last dress watch was in 1990.

No problem , your response was expected, I tend to get that way myself, but still a nice watch , I got it the minute I seen it, and your right better have a full tank and maybe an M-4. With a couple clips!! Tc

Really, everything's junk or massed produced junk....under a thread titled, "What types of watches do you like (italics mine)"...so pretty pointless thread, as except for a few watches here and there, all us like shite according to a few authorities on the subject of "junk" and "massed produced junk" - should just close the thread.

Sorry guys just got here, Now I got us thrown out. I like to see what you ALL like. Really your watch speaks about you. Some of what you have shown I havent seen before.

Shinola is no joke. it's an important watch because it's actually made in the U.S which is a rarity. Of course the innards aren't but I understand they are working on that and in the near future they will be able to produce the mvmts here too-quartz that is. Some of their watches are quite attractive and they are all affordable.

I wouldn't characterize watches as mass produced junk. Yes they are mass produced but that doesn't mean it's junk. They are still high precision instruments whether quartz or mechanical and in the better mvmts whether Seiko or ETA or Stellita, Rolex or some of the in house pieces being produced by a host of watch companies they are quality items. More and more they are using newer materials like ceramics and tungsten and carbon fiber and in the mvmts newer materials like silicon for mainsprings and advanced coatings so the escapments need no lubrication at all.

Here's one made from a block of Damascus Steel. The face is one piece with the case.
