    Mick,
iffen I go after pig, I would use either my 50 Plains rifle, caplock, or my PH 1858 Navy rifle, with Remington or Colt Dragoon for a backup. I am to stiff and fat to run far. The smoothies are real versityle I used a Pat 42 smooth bore musket as kid, shot patched ball with it and got a lot of rabbits and roos out to 50 \yrds. It was an old caplock found in the station store room. Wade have you seen the americanlongrifles.org site? Great bunch of blokes. Nessmuck , chuckle.

Gordon, would you recommend a flintlock for pigs or would you steer towards a cap lock for reliability...Keep in mind I am also too old and fat to run far, and I no longer have the priviledge of a sidearm licence. I just looked into BP pistols for QLD, thinking they may have come under a different section of the firearms classes, but alas that is not to be. Pistols they are, and pistol licence required.

    Mick,
I would start of with a caplock, they are pretty near as reliable ignition wise as a modern centerfire. A flintlock in well schooled hands is pretty near reliable, but I consider pig can be pretty sticky in the lignum, so my personal preference is.50 + and caplock.

    Cheers

I had a Thompson Center Renegade .54 Cal cap and ball in the early eighties. Bought it as a kit gun, my cousin is a gunsmith, so he was already bluing barrels so that was no biggie. I had so much fun with that gun! My buddy got one as well, and we had lots of time to go shoot. Beer cans, center of the label at 50 yards was a no big deal shot. Shot a big mule deer in Idaho in 81. Put a 233 grain ball right through the boiler room, cut all the arteries on top of it's heart. When we skinned it out, we found the ball under the hide on the far side. It was nicked up a bit from it's trip through a couple ribs, but you could still see the fabric mark the patch left. We'd load a ball with 90 grains and found that was the best load, the maxi ball was too heavy, hit like a freight train, but dropped off too soon. I need to get another one, kinda lost track of that one, but they are so fun to shoot!! My 51 yr old eyes will leave the 50 yd beer cans safe with iron sights, but, still fun to make big boom and heap big smoke!! Great thread, donv

I'm starting to get this sinking feeling that one BP gun just won't be enough. I reckon I'm gonna need a long barrelled, a short barrelled, a smooth as well as a rifled bore and maybe I might want a double barrelled shotgun as well (Or maybe I will just settle for an exposed hammer modern DB Shotty)...This is looking like a slippery bloody slope indeed. I got B.P.AD coming on...

yep. i'm "wadepatton" or some such nonsense there. i started a thread when i started on my stock...over a year ago. need to "update" the ultra slow-progress i've made.

I have some flints made by ALR member Rich Pierce of MO...yet to try 'em, but love being able to at least talk the guy that makes the stuff...not enough guys making stuff anymore. Support 'em every chance you get.
