Thread: Hone of the Day

Today's hone of the day is a pretty common one for me. Same old keen kutter with brutal spine wear. I used the coticule geezer sent me a while back. I'm learning it slowly. Not a fast coticule, but she sure is reliable. Set the bevel on some milky slurry. Diluted until I felt it was right and then added a layer of tape. The HHT off the stone was good.
A catch and pop but when I stropped the HHT didn't get that much better. Usually I'll go back and do some more water only but I didn't feel like it. It felt nice and grabby on the TPT and the strop. I test shaved tonight and was rewarded with a truly special coticule edge. Soft and after the shave it felt like I hadn't shaved at all. I'm glad I stopped where I did.
I learned a lot today..
Ps. I raise my slurry with a DMT with no issues

On Sunday it seems one hone for the day is not enough. So I tried two.
A 'common' Belgian for the wosty and an Escher for the Anchor. Interesting how both can give a 'wow' edge during the shave. A two pass but one side of the face each, and the only difference I can tell is one side smells like a coti.
Edit: why SRP are the pics always upside down. Last edited by Frankenstein; 12-20-2015 at 06:18 AM.
I love the smell of shaving cream in the morning!

Nice, Frank. TBH, I think you must rotate them from your end before attaching them.
Smartphone pics come out sideways a lot.
Upside down? Rotate once again!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

One you don't hear much about, the South African Silkvein hone.

different light angle showing some contrast in the stones features.

w/ tan slurry

Working on some Russian Stain less steel. Slow and effective for moving to final finisher stone in progression.... have fun.

4 Natural Beauties
These are the four beautiful woman keeping me up late at night trying to figure them out. My obsession is starting to take a toll on other area of my life. Bags under my eyes and exhausted all the time but I am loving every minute of it. I stayed up late honing four razors with these. 3 from eBay and full bevel sets.
From left to right:
A "no name" stone stamped Washita. It replaced my labeled "Lily White" Washita as the no name is a serious metal hog compared to the lily white. Very fast.
A Soft Arkansas
A Hard Arkansas
A vintage Translucent Arkansas
Using magnification and every test I have calibrated to get a consistent system down. like I said, loving every minute of it.What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

Jnats gave me an online class. Here are the pics.
I wasnt sure how to start. I had been shaving factory edge for a year. Bevel set Chosera 1K, 5K
and then went to Nakayama Mizu Asagi Tomae. and then just boton slurry to dilution and got to scary sharp. Different than any other hones I have used.
Next day I killed another edge and tried it from boton,Tenjyou hard to get a slurry from that one, and lastly used mejiro.
Yes I had to refer to his notes to get all the terms correct. But I am learning.
So with this set up, bevel set to finish I didnt see striations. Is this normal for jnats?
It is sharper and I have been able to get with my Zulu or PHIG, keener may be a better term.
Jnats sent me hone crack with this set up and now I cant stop the madness.Your only as good as your last hone job.
