Thanked: 4827I did not know that in his later years of shaving that he used anything but a Palmera 14. He was very particular for sure.

You are correct Shaun; Bill enjoyed working in pre ban ivory with or without a lathe. Here is a pair of his Tanafuijis scaled in it. Notice the scales on the STEP and Imperial razors in the previous post.

Question to the gods of rocks.... What might this be called, or what make is it.
I just bought this today along with a Champion Barber's hone, and a very hard and smooth purple hone, which I believe to be from a machine, or mold shop. A DMT had a hard time lapping it .

So the mottled one in the box looks like a sythetic coticule. I had one that was on par with an average coti for grit.
Purple one is a Purple PHIG. For Hirlau.
I have never seen one like that before.
Mike your the master of testing things. Test a couple of blades on them to see if they are finishers.Your only as good as your last hone job.

I just put 100 passes on the purple hone.....definite finisher. You don't even hear the blade pass over it, its that smooth. Think of it as a synthetic ceramic stone. You can build a slurry, with a red DMT 25 micron. But its a PINTA....!!! A step above my blue/green Thurigan..... For sure!!!!
The boxed stone....seems to be a natural. But I may be wrong, never seen one quite like this one.Mike

[My new Escher came in the mail today. Celebrated this by honing a NOS Friedr. Schlemper Focus. Result: a very smooth and close shave. Quite similar result as razors finished on my other vtg thuringians - I expected this, but now I'm sure, and, a proud owner of an Escher anyway
