I imagine eating simple yet tasty fare onboard the breakfast car. Some day I am going to rig up a sort of screen that mimics a train window. I'm going to loop passing landscape complete with train sounds so one would feel as if they were on a train sort of. Minus the swaying and bumping. I want to build a sort of dining table to resemble a dining car table again sort of. Y'all see where I'm going with this. I like to have a nice table set because though I be a poor sucker, I still can at least eat semi decent. again thanking God for the gift of cooking. I can make cream O wheat look good. But that's the thing. Years ago I came across some old train car menus. I noticed that the food was pretty much meat n potato type fare. Cream O wheat was on there by the way. The food was not really over the top five star art nouevau stuff at all. Things like porkchops and creamed vegetables or Reuben sandwiches or egg salad. Waldorf Salads. Just old school basic food. But ya put that on a nice plate and suddenly ya got a kings feast y'know. Here is one such example(hope the link works) Seaboard Coast Line 1960s Silver Star Dining Car Menu | eBay If one were to buy for example a plate off of ebay or amazon that once was on a passenger train or boat, that and a nice table cloth and decent looking matching silverware(that could be bought from walmart) Well then, suddenly you've created a little adventure in your home if you will. Anyway, sounds a little far fetched maybe, but that's how I think. Way back in the day when I was yearning for Michigan and felt trapped in the city... I did the following. I bought a cassette tape(this was back in the 80's) of Crickets chirping at night. The tape even had an occasional distant train on it. I bought some cedarwood incense and a single candle. When I got home I put the tape on, lit the candle and incense and turned off all the lights in the apartment. Believe it or not...there was the slight sensation of staring into a campfire with crickets at night...it helped a little bit. That's why I always was enamoured by all the cool backgrounds that the guys at Disneyland created. I always wanted to climb off the boat and go into the jungle at adventure land. Anyway blah blah blah.....you get the picture I s'pose.

Years ago, I lived over in Western Australia in a place called Geraldton. I did a variety of casual and part-time jobs there. I always ate at a place (not there anymore) called Kootchies 24hr Diner. It was run by a bloke called Richard Kuchera and was based on a 50's style American Diner. The place had a good feel about it. And the food was good, wholesome and basic...if you discounted the hotdogs and burgers that were also served there. I ended up working there as a cook come Chef's aide and night manager. It was one of the best jobs I ever had, and if it wasn't for feeling homesick, I would have stayed on. Sadly the place is now your general run of the mill Thai food joint and I don't know what ever happened to the Kuchera family.
