Thanked: 983'Tastes like sh!t but you can live off it. The baked beans are for me'...Sorry stole that line from Crocodile Dundee. Well now, convince you...Bara Lawr is one of those things you either like or you don't like. In it's most basic form like I've had it this morning, it is as close to natural taste as it could be. For first time trying of it, I would suggest to go with adding a little more too it. There are a few recipes you can get online and perhaps trying it out as a potato bake might do to introduce you to this fine Welsh dish, or perhaps in a snack form with a bit of melted cheese on toast.
The best I can describe the taste is that of the sea. How I had it this morning is simply the Laver bread (which is just a type of seaweed) mixed with a little rolled oats, a dribble of lemon juice and fried up in a pan with a little of the bacon fat. I'm afraid you would have to decide for yourself if it's for you or not. It's a bit like tastes in types of tobacco or beer. Some like them as pure as possible and others like to have a few other flavours thrown in to suit their own palate.

I tried to make some English bacon a while ago. I admit it was an experiment and although it was all right, it tasted like a salty pork chop to me.

Thanked: 983Easier to buy it from the butcher shop I'd reckon...And that advice from a bloke who's in the process of making a new satchel bag for himself...It too might be a salty pork chop when I'm finished

Thanked: 1160Well...first off,I love Brit style bacon....but then again as I have said many times...pork is my favorite vegetable. So We got no issues here with bacon or anything else porcine. Now the Laver bread. Well Mick my friend I'll be honest. I can't stand briny anything. I mean I like fried fish and all and even sushi. But I have had my share of eating and even cooking Japaneses food and I never really took much to the seaweed flavor. as a small garnish fine but as a full on mouthful...emmmmm NO ! So..I dare say I shall pass on the poor Laver bread. But however all is not lost on me for Welsh cuisine. In fact, I dare say many a year ago I used to frequent a Welsh tea shop here in Denver. And the Lady of the shop (from Wales she was) made the best Welsh tea cakes. I could eat a ton of'em. In fact I believe it were she who got me to adoring scones n jam and tea. so put that in yer Welsh hat and smile ! Yay !!
