But then I got thinking about my wife's family. they would make steak etc. for the adults and the kids would get hot dogs or mac and cheese. Maybe that is what they wanted maybe not. My point is that if what we can afford is hot dogs that is what we get. If I can afford steak that is what everyone gets.

One problem I had is when we went to a seafood place and my youngest didn't like any options on the menu. I could get an extra lobster tail for $X.XX with my meal. I would order that for him and if he didn't like it I could have it. OOOOPS After that, that is all he wanted!
I think you worry too much, my daughter gets the same as my wife and I, unless she is having dinner earlier, then she usually gets a choice of two things. Sometimes she will choose dinner for the family on the same principal.
Children generally will always want what they know, so unless we encourage them to eat a variety of things they won't. I remember a news story in the UK about a 16 year old who only ate strawberry jam sandwiches, I think it was not even good bread and jam.

Today I had a couple of pieces of toast with butter and vegemite. That didn't put a dent in my regular diet and felt hungry all day anyway. (I did eat lunch. ) I am finding that if I eat a breakfast early before work I still end up eating as much through the day. So I am just adding more food to my diet. If i hold my breakfast to 9 or 10 am I feel not hungry until then and eat less overall during the day.

I am leaning toward that if i eat 2 breakfasts 12 hours apart i eat less and feel more full throughout the day. I am not saying that this is the way to go and let us know your thoughts on this if you disagree. (Or agree. )

I agree with you . What I am thinking of is treating the children as second class. They are an equal to me in that respect. If i am poor they might not eat the best but I will not eat any better than them. many parents satisfy their own desires be it cars ,drugs or food, whatever and if there is anything left over the kids can have it.

The children should come before their parents in regards to a safe and healthy environment.

Couldn't agree more, children don't have a lit of choice but to take what they are given, it is our responsibility to respect them.

Well, with the bad influence and peer pressure that goes on here, I went out and found a local source of steel cut oats...It almost cost a testicle for 1 kilo of the stuff here, but I know I can get it for much cheaper from a bulk sales shop down South that does minimum's of 1 kilo for less than half the price of the local Organic shop.
So last nights dinner (but this is a breakfast thread, so no pictures) contained some, and for breakfast this morning it was steel cut oats with a pat of butter and some honey with a slice of fresh (well I baked it last night, so fresh enough) homemade bread soon to be turned to toast with butter.

So you see what I was talking about with the price of buying oats this way!

I don't see anything mentioning taste/texture... Give us a review!

About anything seems to mix with oats but i never thought of butter.

Thinking about Australia again I made Macadamia pancakes, bacon, and blueberries today. But like Mick said it was the wrong time of day so I won't post pictures. [Plus they didn't turn out!]

Well I like the steel cut oats, but having been raised on rolled oats, I actually find I prefer the creamier texture and taste of them. Steel cut oats reminds me a lot of Sago (which I also like) in texture. I also had that pat of butter on the SC oats which proved to be a little too rich for my taste. Next time around I will prepare my SC oats and simply add a bit milk and honey to it. I found I needed to add honey to the SC oats which I don't usually do with rolled oats. All up, I think there is a definite place for SC oats in my pantry cupboard, providing I can find them at a more reasonable price. Otherwise they will be relegated to the 'rare treat' department.

When I was a cook I used to make it with lots of fine chopped ground sausage on the flat top. Then with the grease(most of it) drained, I threw it in a big pot with a little light roux, Milk, cream or 1/2 n 1/2, salt and pepper and some sage. let it simmer a bit to thicken and Shazam ! Sausage gravy. That's all I'm givin up .

It looks like the wife might have breakfast planned in the morning. She has bacon out defrosting and I've thrown the dry ingredients together ready for an early morning start on some Russian Black Bread. Just have to add the water and the treacle. Hopefully it'll turn out good, because I'm looking forward to trying this bread to see if it's like the dark bread I remember getting from the local corner shop when I was a younger fulla than I am now.
