I am a beginner tea drinker as well as beginner shaver (advanced pipe smoker though) but i am curious. what are the advantages to a samovar over a traditional tea pot?

I don't think one method of preparing tea is better than the other, just different. What it really comes down to is your taste and your opinion.

In my opinion nothing beats a good oolong tea brewed in a fine yixing tea pot.

The samovar was a russian tea invention.what you have is a large water urn with a compartment in the middle that holds hot coals. The coals heat the water in the urn.On top of the urn sits a teapot that is kept warm also by the coals.Inside the tea pot is an extremely strong mixture of brewed black tea.So strong in fact, that if you tried to drink it straight,Jimi Hendrix would start playing in the background and you would start conversing with white rabbits and such....but i digress.what you do is pour some of the tea into a cup to desired strength and then add hot water from the spigot on the side of the Samovar.Russians would spend hours sitting around the samovar drinking tea and eating tea cakes and caviar and such. They would also add jam to their tea to sweeten and flavor it Da ! This is bsically the type of thing you would want if you had a family of tea drinkers and wanted hot tea all day long. They make electric ones nowadays though.
