How do you control the temp on a BBQ?

I have a digital temp controller that I got from work. I drilled a small hole in the lid of the smoker and JB Welded a thermocouple in it.

I made a speed control for a small fan that the temp controller is interfaced to. The fan blows fresh air into the bottom damper and slows down as the cooker comes up to set point temp. You just have to learn how to set the dampers so the temp goes down when the fan quits. Not hard to do. I can run my egg for way more than 24 hours without adding fuel.

    Want a pic?

No that pistol isn't the only thing under my kilt, but I can tell you both of them work just fine

Here is the fan. I made the box from a thin sheet of aluminum so I didn't have to modify the grill.

I guess no one liked it.

I presented this package to a bunch of contest cooking people. They all thought it was cheating.

I have a BBQ Guru DigiQ temp controller that works the same way your rig does. The people that don't like what you made must like staying up all night to watch their smoker.

    Nice work.
