How after-shave was invented, many years ago:

Manager of perfume company: "Gentlemen, I've called you together for this meeting to discuss ways to increase our sales. Give me some ideas."
Marketing man: "I know. We could sell our cologne to men."
Manager: "Don't be daft! Only women wear cologne. If a man wore it he would be laughed at and his masculinity questioned!"
Marketing man: "Then we need to find a way to make it sound manly. Maybe by associating it with a manly activity, like shaving. That's it! We'll call it after-shave!"
Manager: "Brilliant! You're promoted! Now let's go out and get drunk to celebrate."

i define manly as whatever gets women's attention the best. I was wearing Allure by Chanel for a long time, constantly got complemented on it. last time I ran out I switched to Dirty English because to me it was a very manly scent, wood, leather, good without being musky, which I hate (if I had a pelt I'd want musk). my wife got me one for Christmas, smells pleasant, light and a touch of citrus, but WAY too weak, no staying power. not a single complement or comment on it yet. I'm just gonna blow through it and go back to the Allure.

and the reason to wear cologne, um, same reason we want women to wear perfume, our food tastes better when it smells good.

Try just rubbing your face in your armpit (if you are flexible enough) THAT is a manly smell

I am not being totally serious, but it is something about body odor that is manly. I once had a girl almost attacking me (in a way I really enjoyed) when I smelled like s**t.

I use AOS Sandalwood cream to shave, and my girlfriend LOVES it. We'll be laying around and she'll just smell my cheeks and then jump me.

I think that's a pretty solid sign that it's a good manly scent.

AS I use Nivea for sensitive skin...nourishes, keeps me soft, and is unscented.

Also, with the AOS Sandalwood, I retain that smell all day long.
