Picked this up from eBay listed as a broken blade, or blade for parts.

A Wade and Butcher, Fine India Steel, razor, with a nicely worked spine. Here's the listing pic:

And after some restore work by Valery and the Gentleman's Den, this turned into a beautiful blade, all original.

I wonder what the seller thought was broken about it.

    Yup - that's what I figure...$71.00 of broken.

yeh no idea by some sellers
I got a couple of straights last weekend fro the local markets.
they had complete straights a 7/8 Bengall but had a good 1/8" plus chip in the middle of the blade edge the extended in the thicker reinforcing between the belly & the edge & another 5/8 but with heavy hone wear. they wanted $50 each for them noting the chip was fixable
then said they had a bag of bits for $30 it had 2 str8s with broken scales, a 13/16" J. Dirlam & Sons Balmoral in great nick & original box & a heavily patina/rusty 6/8 Bengal
both were more salvageable that the 2 complete str8s so I took them LOL new scales & i light clean on the Balmoral & some experimentling with the Bengall with I found a small crack in the middle of the toe in after soaking in Evaporust

Default A story with a sad ending

Got this one back in August:

Only last night got around to honing it. The honing seemed to go well, but then, under 300x magnification, this is what I found:

The shape of the razor suggests it had been ground down to its current 13/16. I suspect that a previous honer had tried to chase the crack up the blade.

The crack is at about a third of the length along the blade, so no shorty for this one.

The scales are in good shape. I'll save those.

What a shame, Joe. Makes me think twice about buying used razors online. There's no way you could see a crack like that without magnification.

It happens, and in my experience sellers who aren't familiar with straight razors are just selling an old razor covered in dirt and rust. On the two occasions where I've cleaned up a blade and discovered a crack, the seller has been more than willing to take a return or refund the money.

Lost a beautiful 8/8 W&B Celebrated, was very dirty, after a light cleaning there was a small hairline crack in the blade - there was no way the seller could have seen it. I pointed it out and the seller refunded the money.

After finding the crack, I tried peering at the edge closely, and couldn't see anything, then tried a loupe with illuminated 40x magnification, and still couldn't see anything. I've got two or three other razors with cracks, and those cracks, once the rust was off, were all too visible. So this one was a real disappointment. Nice scales, though.
