[QUOTE=MikeB52;1486560]Yes the small one is just as you describe, one piece steel blade with a brass cap wrapped around it. From the end you can clearly see it as such.
Beautiful Mike! I love frame backs a lot & that one is stunningly gorgeous.............

Hinchcliffe, George W. (Edge tool maker).
Address: 87 Eyre Street, Sheffield in 1846.
Recorded in: Slaters 1846 Directory, Sheffield.
Hinchcliffe, George Willis (merchant, steel converter and table knife, razor and saw manufacturer).
Address: 22 Eyre Street, in 1833.
Recorded in: Whites History & Directory of Sheffield - 1833.
Hinchcliffe, George Willis (steel converters and refiners).
Address: Eyre Street, Sheffield in 1846.
Recorded in: Slaters 1846 Directory, Sheffield.
The surprise:
On the spine written in gothic characters three different text:
"illegible PATENT Silver Steel", "Fine PATENT India Steel" and "Improved Cast Steel".
The three framebacks are very little used, perfectly equal (apart the writings) and together in the same case box.....
After a fast and easy honing, they give a close but delicate shaving.Last edited by altus; 08-13-2015 at 06:53 PM.

Very nice score! Just beautiful. By the tail length, I'd say 1833 or around there............
Look like Ivory scales also.

Nice set Altus! Most likely from the 1840's but certainly prior to 1851 as George Willis was declared insolvent in July 1850 and died in December of 1850.

In fact, with these three, in the fourth place of the case was this near wedge Joseph Mappin "Real Old English Razor" (c.1850)

Thanked: 98Wow, some really nice razors, my favorite frameback would be the brass backs, swiss, norway and some others have made them. One day I'll find a nice brassy to buy.

Holy moly what a bunch of cool razors in this club! Hopefully I can make a humble contribution with this razor that I've had kicking around for a while. I'd really appreciate any info, this is my only real frame back. I think it's a John Barber by the symbol and someone scratched "John Barber" in the scales but can that be confirmed? Were other makers using the mark? Also, does the blade come out and if so, how and should it be taken out from time to time for cleaning, etc.? I'd like to use this someday but as you can see the scales are crumbling. What would you guys do with this?
