The Captain has a few whiskers, but it was easy peasy for me...
This is the facility I retired from as a Tool & Die maker, making experimental pieces for whatever a Physicist could dream up. I made the rounds of a few shops, ending up in the Physics Department.. So, on with the tour..
The entrance to Brookhaven National Laboratory, which sits on the site of Old Camp Upton, where many a WWI Doughboy learned the ropes in basic. I have an old hand grenade found on the site, sans fuse and hardware..
BNL is basically a city unto itself, with at one time more than 3,000 employees. It's focus is basic research with almost nil towards weapons, but it is a nuclear facility. Hence, it has it's own security force, hospital, fire department, Post Office and all other services a small municipality would have...
The entrance to the Lab. The Main Gate is about a quarter mile up the road...
Next is the new Administration building, housing Personell offices, the Bank, Travel Offices and Visitor Services..
And last for today, the old HFBR (High Flux Beam Reactor), a Heavy Water Research Reactor , upgraded from 40 MW to 60 MW of heat energy, designed specifically to supply copious amounts of neutrons for the experimental ports placed around the core. I worked at the Reactor for almost twenty years, and it's kinda' sad to see it now being dismantled, but time marches on... The vessel will remain... far too dangerous to remove because it's hotter than a $2 pistol...
I only wish I could have gotten a pic of the spent fuel pool, now empty of the spent fuel rods (enriched U-235) that emitted such a beautiful bluish glow under twenty feet of protective water... the danger belied by the soft glow of Cerenkov Radiation...
