Aura Glow as a Pre Shave Oil
Acqua di Parma Shave Soap (Thanks Curtiss)

    John Holler Tower Brand 6/8
    SRD Premium I Strop .. 50 Linen/200 Leather
    Dickinson's Witch Hazel
    Nivea AS Balm Sensitive
    Pinaud Lilac Vegetal

Here's a prop you won't see very often... A 2" cross section of a fuel bundle for a nuclear reactor. I worked at the HFBR at Brookhaven National Laboratory for almost 20 years, before moving on to other areas of the Lab. When a person of importance would retire from the Reactor Division, they would be presented with a piece, just like this one, of dummy fuel element, and i usually had to make them. Of course, theirs would be engraved with name and date... this one is not, but it's a great conversation piece.
In a real bundle for operation, there would be U-235 clad between the aluminum semi-circular sections shown... This piece obviously has no U-235... a complete dummy rod.

The Tower Brand razor delivered a great shave, as always, and is becoming a real favorite amongst my "no-name" razors...

There will be no SOTD from me tomorrow as my small way of observing the murderous attacks of September 11, 2001. While I was lucky to have not lost any friends or family in the tragedy, many others from around the world, and this area in particular were not as fortunate...
A close friend lost his younger brother, an FDNY Firefighter and member of one of the Special Operations Command units, Squad 18. I will not publish this hero's name, but if you follow the link, and highlight the names, you will see his image, and I encourage everyone to do so...

This man gave up his life in an attempt to save others in the Twin Towers. I attended the wake and funeral, and it was a highly emotional experience for me... one that I will never forget. There were FDNY Ladder trucks, an honor guard and bagpipes playing Amazing Grace... a very moving experience...

May God keep all their souls....

Absolutely not, I'd very much like to hear from my friendly fellow straight shavers where they were and/or what they remember from that day.

I was at a credit union applying for a loan. Someone in line said a plain hit a building in NY. I thought. What again? Thats because around WW2 a military plane crashed into the empire state building. Never thought it would have been done on purpose. We left after filling out the papers and listening to the news got home to see the 2nd plane hit. What a horrible feeling. That night we went to church across the street.

    Bill,
That was beautiful (and thanks for the link) . I believe that I will dedicate tomorrow's shave to the 9/11 victims (don't know how yet, but we'll see).

Interesting reactor piece you got there...looks like you had a heck of a time at BNL...I love hearing these kinds of stories.

I was at work. Just like any other day at the office. People started buzzing around the office saying there were reports of a plane hitting the WTC. I remember following it online and talking on the phone with friends in Manhattan. Two of my friends, along with many other people had to walk over the bridges that day to leave Manhattan. I live 35 minutes outside of New York City so I had many friends and family in the city that day.

I personally knew two people who passed away that day. One was an employee at Cantor Fitzgerald located on the 102nd floor of Tower 1. Another was an NYC Fireman.

I will never forget the feeling I had that day.

I was in my office and watched CNN life because my son went to Mission Viejo, CA as an exchange student some weeks ago.
It was a terrible moment to watch the attacks.
I called the host-parents of my son and we realized that we are ONE family.

The host-family has a military background and you know I am a retired Army-Captain.
    We stood together.
    And together we stand!
    We never forget the victims.

    Default Friday morning shave

    Strop: SRD 3" Latigo
Suds: Castle Forbes cedarwood and sandalwood SC
    Brush: Simpson B4 pure badger
    Razor: Boker Red Injun 101
    Astringent: Alum block
    AS: Proraso
    Result: Good

I'm having some trouble dialing in the 101. She's better looking than the 102 I have, but she doesn't shave nearly as well. I haven't been able to get the same edge on her as Max had for me some months ago. I touched her up last night with 10 laps on a Cr02 pasted strop, and that helped a lot. Overall, I got a really close, smooth shave, but it's not as comfortable as I'd like.

    Cheers, Gents!

    Larry

    SOTD Friday September 10, 2010

Razor: 6/8 C.V. Heljestrand, Eskilstuna, Sweden, Full Hollow, Franch Point
    Pre-Shave: Proraso Crema Pre Barba
Shave Cream/Shave Soap: Uberlather; Pre' de Provence SC+Classic Shaving Sandalwood SS
    Soap Scuttle: Lord Nelson Ceramic
    Brush/Lather Scuttle: RAB Ceramic
    Brush: Omega Boar
    ASB: Nivea Replenishing
    Aftershave/Cologne: Pinaud Clubman ASL

Results: A great shave considering I forgot to shake the brush when I went to mix the Pre' de Provence SC and got it too wet. It totally went to junk; all the lather sublimed away immediately and it literally became transparent. I Grabbed the Lord Nelson Scuttle that was loaded with Classic Shaving SS and mixed it into the SC and Wah-Lah a great smooth lather. The Sandalwood of the SS complimented the Pre'de Provence SC and everything went Peachy after that.
I always get a great shave from the Heljie and finally finished rescaling it in Red Pakka Wood. It looks much better now without those ugly chipped and gouged scales. Great photos this week Gentlemen, thanks for sharing!
