Yes, I realize that, as a turner tool, the edge need not be that sharp. It isn't practical. But, for the first edge you put on it, why the heck not?! I'd certainly give it a go!

I had an idea for the handle, though I don't know if it would mesh with the material you already have picked out. A clear acrylic section that would show off the stamps!
Oh man, To put a shave ready edge on a rounded gouge....... might not be a comfortable edge, but I can give it a go!

Funny, I thought of the same thing with the clear acrylic to show the makers mark. the problem with that is the inside would have to be polished to near glass like. It would be very...... frustrating to do.

An alternate idea: oval/oblong "windows" cut on each side of the handle where the stamp would be visible. Turn the wood, stopping short of finishing, cut each hole for the windows, cut pieces of acrylic to fit, polish what will be the inside, carefully glue into place (trying to avoid difficult to reach glue mess that would show), then finish her out.

I'm just spit-balling again. It's another one of my hobbies .

I just looked at the gouge pics again. I mistook the sides for a dull & rounded bevel of sorts... bad angles for shaving if you were to hone them .

My coworker just had a fantastic idea. Keep the wood handle back from the makers mark, also keep the end of the handle a bit rough or jagged. Take some tape, wrap around the handle an leave it stick past as a form. Then pour in some clear casting resin......... might just work!!!

I got a bid on another too. Haha. I think I might need a Greaves gouge too. or maybe a nice wide, round nose skew.......
That saved search thing on ebay really comes in handy.

Really pretty cool, Andrew. Things are less expensive than razors and a fellow like yourself can restore and actually use them!

I could buy this big one.... Check out the price.

High-Speed Steel Roughing Gouges - Lee Valley Tools

Or I could buy a vintage Wade & Butcher the same size (Maybe bigger). Kind of a no brainer.

So I just scored a bresduck lifetime model. It's not the sought after grim reaper ( but I'm still happy). Here's a little razor porn for all you fine gentlemen. There are more pics but I thought this would do.
