Thanked: 375I've been trying to narrow my shave soap collection down to four. Here's what I've used and think performed very well
La' Toja
Tabac
RazoRock for Captains Choice Bay Rum (I've had under performers with this brand also)
FitJar
MDC
Mikes Natural soaps
Prep
Not as impressed with these brands but they don't suck either
DR Harris
Crab Tree & Evelyn (Nomad - love this scent though)
Spieck
PGS (performs well, just burns my skin...not biggieCHRIS

I have read that Los Angeles Shave soap company makes there product similar to MDC. Any truth to that statement. Much cheaper in price and is very local for me.
I love the Almond Creme scent from Stirling.-David

Here's the best of the best, most talked/raved about AND the best choice:
MWF but people find difficulty lathering.
MdC but it's way too expensive.
Tabac but scent isn't for everybody.
LPL but hard to buy.
So I would say Proraso. Excellent, traditional and cheap. I like the white tub. Or Truefitt & Hill for a reasonably priced brilliant luxury soap. Then you can take on the list above

With all the new artisan soaps hitting the scene, I wonder how many of these lists have changed. I know mine has been flipped around a bit.

Tabac - #1 - can't be replaced
Mike's - generally excellent but the puck needs to be soft so that lots of product can be loaded on the brush. That's the key to good lather in my experience with this brand. Scents are great.
below these but one's I use regularly for excellent shaves are
Proraso green - easy to lather with nice menthol kick.
DR Harris - Arlington - again easy to lather but a bit less dense than the others.
I have had no luck with Sterling and the new formula Trumpers is a disaster.

Thanked: 1185I myself could function wonderfully if the world of shaving soap was reduced to just two. I'll make no attempt to rank order them because as far as I'm concerned they're in pretty much a dead heat:
Tabac
Mitchell's Wool Fat.
Of course there are a few others in my rotation (Arko, VDH Luxury, Cella, TOBS Eton College which is a cream actually) that deliver great shaves and have outlasted my passing fancy but Tabac and MWF are the undisputed kings of my rotation and I'll always have a supply of both readily on hand in my shave cave. By contrast the others tend to do more guest appearances (i.e. gee, I haven't shaved with XXX for a long time think I'll give it a go.)Last edited by 1OldGI; 06-11-2014 at 07:20 PM.

Stirling Barber Shop
Proraso Tub (Green and White IMO)
Nivea Original in a tube
Palmolive Original in a tube
