The Magic of Martin de Candre
Gentlemen:
Let me offer a small note about the magic of Martin de Candre:
A gracious and generous friend sent me a sample of Martin de Candre and I am forever grateful for this gift. Using a variety of brushes with both double edge and straight razors, I have spent a week on a sweet ride of unforgettable shaves with this remarkable soap. I don't know how many quality soaps I have used through the years, but Martin de Candre is in a separate category for me.
Lather, glide and cushion are unmatched by anything I have used, including Mitchell's Wool Fat and Provence Sante Verlaine. The fragrance treats the senses with a strong hint of peat moss and strains of lavender and mint. That you need only a few swirls of the brush to create a white cloud of luxurious lather adds another star to Martin de Candre.
The soap is pricey, yes, but I find it within acceptable range for superb quality. Shipping charge is what kills. It's surreal. Why so expensive I don't know. Will I order Martin de Candre? Yes, I will — when I get a few extra shekels in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, I might be able to squeeze one more shave from my sample of Martin de Candre.
Gentlemen, have you used Martin de Candre and what are your thoughts on what I consider a celestial shaving soap? Thanks.
Regards,
Obie

I agree completely with what you have said here, Obie.
It is a very luxurious experience all the way.
Plenty of wonderful lather, great glide and cushion, and a clean delightful smell.
When it comes to soaps this is absolutely top notch.
I also purchased a couple of their eau de candre and the copra oil with my soap.
Those products are also stellar in every way.
The package also included a couple very nice bat-soaps as well. Good stuff!
Martin de Candre will stay in my rotation for a very long timeBjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Martin de Candre may be my favorite shaving soap - It most definitely is top 3. Lathers like crazy, great scent (took me awhile, but I love it now), plenty of cushion and great glide.
Top notch stuff and definitely worth the price even with shipping. It also is 170g of soap as opposed to something like AOS that is 90g, so take that into account.Last edited by Joe Edson; 04-25-2011 at 02:58 PM.

Thanked: 23I too think this is just about the best soap / cream out there. The thing which kills me is that I spent my last year's summer holiday about 10km from their shop / operation in the Loire valley in France but didn't make any use of that! It was just when I was getting into wet shaving and I hadn't heard of Martin de Candre. I think another holiday is called for.

Obie,
i too have received a sample of the candre and i have to say.. i'm into it.. not sure if it's better than provence sante.. they are both in the same league.. but they seem about equal so far.. i'm only 1 shave in.. so maybe i need a few more shaves before i come to a final decision..
one thing that does amaze me is how little i need to load my brush with this soap.. i imagine 170g would last me quite a few years.

Gee Obie, you have the lyrics, I'll do the score and we can come up with a jingle and sell it to them and make a mint.
You guys are killing me with these soaps. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Hello, thebigspendur:
Now you're talking.
Better yest, I think you and I will make a great musical team. We'll rival the best of them: Frank Lesser and Abe Burrows (Guys and Dolls); Jerme Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II (Show Boat); Anrew Lloyd Webber and Chrles Hart and Richard Stilgoe (The Phantom of the Opera); Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein (La Cage Aux Folles); and Frederick Lowew and Alan Jay Lerner (My Fair Lady).
Listen, what do they have that we don't? I don't see why we couldn't do Broadway musicals about razors and soaps. Lynn and the Mods can do the singing and the dancing.
"All right, boys and girls, let's take it from the top . . ."

Obie,
When my friend LeagleBeagle heard I was going to France for spring break, he told me to be sure and buy some Martin de Candre. Acting on this advice, I went to Planete Raisore in Paris to make my purchase. I did buy another item or two while in the store (see http://straightrazorpalace.com/shave...tml#post774333). Yes, MdC is not the most inexpensive soap, but when it's compared to the price of the Theirs Issard and the Jorvis brush the MdC was a steal
I'll have to admit, at first I was undecided about the scent of Martin de Candre, but now I love it. As for performance, it is definitely the top soap in my rotation. I'm a uberlatherer, so the first time I used it, I used T&H Ultimate Comfort shave cream and glycerin with the MdC. After reading another thread about MdC I tried it non-uberlather - just the MdC by itself. I was STUNNED at the quality of the lather it produced. I have never seen a soap produce this kind of cushion all by itself! I can't say enough good things about it. Even though I teased Bill about "making" me spend so many euros in the razor shop, I'm incredibly thankful he turned me on to this awesome soap!!!!

Hello, Greg:
After viewing the link your provided, I can easily see myself as a hungry explorer in such a shopping paradise. And the stuff you came away with is exquisite.
As for mixing high quality soaps — Mitchell's Wool Fat, Provence Sante Verlaine, Truefitt & Hill, Martin de Candre and others — I use them in their pristine state. I figure if such high-end soaps can't stand up on their own, then I will not spend the money. I do have a pile of Arko shaving cream in my stash and use it with the lower grade soaps I can't bring myself to get rid of.
But back to Martin de Candre: Oy!
Regards,
Obie

I'm happy to hear you gentlemen are happy with my advice vis-a-vis this wonderful product. I only wish I could get a piece of their action for sending customers their way! With soaps, I am almost always an uberlatherer myself. That said, I've never tried the MdC in an uber, nor can I imagine doing so. This soap is as close to perfect as I've found in a soap, and I absolutely have become smitten!
Sincerely,
The Enabler...He saw a lawyer killing a viper on a dunghill hard by his own stable; And the Devil smiled, for it put him in mind of Cain and his brother Abel.
