I'm finishing the move this weekend into the fiances house. At the end of October we decided not to wait till spring and just get it over with. That's why Ive been a ghost and probably will be again for a few weeks until I get settled in. One of the prior owners built a pretty decent workshop in the basement. I believe they did custom framing. That will soon be my new razor lab. I have still not tackled posting pics from my celly but I'll get some up of the shop once my computer is hooked back up. I also need to rebuild my shave den in the second bathroom. The fiance's mortgage is two thirds what I was paying for rent and we're splitting that so ill be eating high off the hog again come December. Anyway I just wanted to say hey and explain my recent absence. I can't wait to get back to some serious razorin'! All the best gents.

Good luck Matt to you and your fiance. I wish you both the best & look forward to seeing your work on here again soon.

Outback, I haven't heard that in awhile until Tom brought it back up but I felt it was an appropriate name. It wasn't long after you joined here that you took off like a rocket & was spitting razors out like a Machine Gun spitting out lead & you still do. I was like that up until a few years ago & I need to go get a physical & I even told my dr that last time I saw him a couple months ago. I think I may have had a very minor stroke a few years ago when I woke up one morning on my side & I thought it was from the way I slept because I had fallen asleep on my sofa but I couldn't speak well & my motor skills were somewhat disoriented. I even went to my ex gf's house & she saw it but a couple days later I was normal again.

    Default the old W&B

Some months back, I posted about an old W&B I got for a few bucks:

Size: 33.7 KB

I could tell it was a W&B just barely, because you can see the cross and the "ER" from "BUTCHER" above the Sheffield stamp even though the top of the tang has been ground away:

Roy (cudarunner), a true gentleman, volunteered to take it on for fun and sent it back polished, honed and pinned, spacers around the tang, with the scales nicely cleaned up:

Then I was able to shave with it, which was fun although it surely is heavy! The only problem was that those old scales are kind of skinny, and the blade is big so the toe started to stick out from the bottom. So I put it in some wood scales. They aren't great work on my part, but they make the razor functional. Also the bevel is very uneven -- I tried to use tape to compensate for a very uneven spine but with limited success. Still it shaves!

I also had some fun with the wedge, which is lead lined with brass. I might do some more of those.

I kept the old scales that Roy cleaned up so nicely and I will probably put a smaller blade in them. Thanks Roy!

I'm glad you got it back up and running. Looks nice.

I'll tell you straight up---there is nothing wrong with an uneven bevel! Nothing! As long as the razor shaves and shaves nice, that's all that counts!

My great grandfather's W&B's bevel looks like a snakes trail but it shaves nice. Oh I could have it reground but Why?

Interesting scales. I'll keep an eye out for them when their finished and pinned.

What did you use to color the scales blue? Did the color get more uneven as they dried?

    A new challenge for me..

A JR Torrey 5/8ths., worked spine, gold etched blade, with MOP covered tang, that's been broken, and heavy patina.

I did a bit of cleaning on the B side, with some NeverDull, to see what it would do, since you can supposedly use it on gold.

I'm thinking of using CA n soda for the repair of the missing piece in the show side tang cover. Being it will be hidden behind the scales. The B side is a clean break, and being they look to have been glued to the tang originally, they'll be epoxied back on, with a light pinning as before.

Hone wear looks even, but its been honed into the stabilizers, creating a heal hook, and a frown that needs addressed. But I think I can make it live again.!

I’m sure you’ll get it looking in the best shape you possibly can Mike.

The CA and soda repair to the MOP was a success, actually came out better than I expected. I used a couple brass #18 escutcheon pins for pinning the MOP to the tang, along with a coat of T-88 epoxy for strength, and to keep out debris, as well as moisture.
To keep things true, I removed the silver collar n pin from the wedge, and will pin it up with brass as well.
I've also addressed the issue with the heel, by grinding a new profile, or as some might say....the outback slash.
Lost the gold in the etch, so a rag in hand with 3M, for a clean up on the blade.
