AND you post a picture of the previously posted scales that look like you've sanded quite a depression in them presumably with that 'Fine Rust Eraser'.

I'm wondering where 'we' went from using a fairly high grit sandpaper to 'lightly' sand the scales to using a coarse grit that I'd presume was meant for use in metal to dig a hole in the scales?

    Just wondering
My friend, you can unlace your boxing gloves! The picture gave a false impression. There's no depression in the scales.

Here's a picture after I wiped off the dust.

I might have removed a thousandth of an inch. And, that Japanese fine eraser is probably about 1K -- I don't consider that a fine grit at all (although maybe I should). Yes it's sold for metal, but so is 3M Wetordry, and pretty much any silicon carbide sandpaper.

The reason I said, "That's the ticket" is that after I used the eraser I could see that you and BeJay were completely right when you said it was surface oxidation. I was too lazy to get some wet and dry and go to the sink -- so I just used the eraser to check.

Now that I know it's bakelite (which has formaldehyde in it), when I recycle the scales I'll do as you and BeJay suggested and use sandpaper under running water.

    Ah, now I can see!

It's been said "A picture tells a thousand words" and the first picture wasn't telling the truth, the second one does.

Sanding under the running water not only keeps the smell down it lets you pretty much see what you've got as you go.

I would say no, not a full wedge, but a nice heavy blade never the less.
