Thanked: 4827Jfk742, wedging and a heat gun sounds tricky. Those things can generate crazy heat.
Oldnick, I like your projects and this design is great. Starting with horn the exact thickness you want before pressing it will require experience. Super cool. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

That pressed horn is awesome!
When looking for a blade for nice scales, like a set of ivory I have recently, I was surprised that out of 12 loose blades not one fit the length ave width just right.
Maybe you have a perfect blade for those?

Rezdog,
Was pretty easy. I took it really slow and did one section at a time. Only had to go back over one little area as I took the wedge out before the horn set. I did all the heating in hand and didn’t want to unpin it as everything looks original. Couldn’t find my neatsfoot, hoping the local tack store has some.

Love the pressed horn, oldnick, opens up so many possibilities. What do you make your dies from, if you don’t mind sharing?

Ok, my 2nd attempt at pinning isn't going as smooth as my first.
I knew this one was going to be a bit tough, it was closing way off center and closing on a scale before I took it apart, but I think I've got that issue under control.
The difficulty now is that the wedge does not fit well. It is wider at the base and tapers inward going toward the edge of the scales so no matter how tight you pin it, it does not touch the scales all the way toward the edge. I'm not sure this wedge will ever stay in place.
Any fix for something like this? Maybe sand inside the scales so the wedge fits better?Last edited by sonnythehooligan; 11-25-2018 at 11:09 PM.
