It is super common to have the wedge shaped like that. I always get the wedge pinned tight before I start with the pivot. You could take it apart, flip the wedge and try again. I’m having a hard time thinking this through but memory seems to have the fat edge up, opening the scales slightly for the blade.

The spread at the pivot end with only wedge in the scales should be about 3/4 inch IMO. The angle looks like it might be a bit much. But as Rez said, getting the wedge end pinned tight or very close to tight helps hold it together for the flexing when pinning the pivot end. If the angle of the wedge is too much it can be hard to get a snug fit. Or if the pin hole is not close enough to the end of the scales it will spread.

Take it apart, check the angle and go at it again. Its going to be the only way to get it closed up.
    It's just Sharpening, right?

I was thinking of the wedge being "upside down".

Lucky you Tim. I was out all day yesterday and saw not a single deer.

I am back on my brush project. The centres are all sealed.Name: 7B84F2CD-C065-44C0-B0DA-8667035D6612.jpg

The knots are all easy to pop in and out so I guess it is time to wax the handles and epoxy the knots in place. I am going to wax first so if I slop any extra epoxy around it should clean up a little easier.

Luck was not with me this year, this one wasn't mine. I saw plenty but especially the older I get if the shot isn't perfect I don't take it.

We hunt as a group and also share our rewards.

Along with the work of pulling them out of the woods and cleaning it!

Two coats of wax and the knots glued in.
Time to go make some supper and then buff them a little when my belly is full.

I took it apart and it was exactly 3/4 inch just like you said.

Like a few others have mentioned, I also wondered if I had the wedge upside down.

When I sort of "mock up" the razor with the brass rods holding things in place and I flip the wedge around the other way, the wedge blocks the razor from closing.

This is the way I had it:

This is the way it looks flipped over- when it blocks the razor:

Here is what it looks like outside of the scales:

...and finally here is the pin hole.

This probably just is a case of me needing to get that wedge end pinned better. If I have it flipped wrong, I definitely welcome the feedback.

Probably best to work on this thing tomorrow anyway.

Ok, my 2nd attempt at pinning isn't going as smooth as my first.

I knew this one was going to be a bit tough, it was closing way off center and closing on a scale before I took it apart, but I think I've got that issue under control.

The difficulty now is that the wedge does not fit well. It is wider at the base and tapers inward going toward the edge of the scales so no matter how tight you pin it, it does not touch the scales all the way toward the edge. I'm not sure this wedge will ever stay in place.

Any fix for something like this? Maybe sand inside the scales so the wedge fits better?
Pin the wedge end first. I typically wedge a half-clothespin in until all is flush. tape it up and remove screw and pin the bottom tightly.
Then do same at the top...

    I rest my case.
