I'm really liking those three part scales! It reminds me of a three piece suit.
Also it opens up more possibilities of where the components can be sourced from..

Thanks for the help, Mike. I did find the repaired piece by looking on the inside of the scales. Its the front scale.
    Very nice work Jerry!

Quick update - got the blade honed up and did a test pass with it. It did a pretty good job. A little awkward without the handle, but it seems worth while to continue with it. Time to order some horn and learn a new skill. I'll post it up with pics when it's done.

    Thanks for the advice.

Got some linen firehose to make strops from, but I'm not sure if it will work. Never worked with linen though so maybe it is normal.
Cut a small test strip and scrubbed with hand soap and soft brush a little bit to see how it reacted. Scraped non striped side with my thumbnail to see what it did to surface.

    Still wet in pictures.

If that's old fire hose, Josh, beware of imbedded particles.

It is going to get washed, then washed again. And again, until all foreign material is out.
Does old linen dry rot? Or am I being paranoid?

Still don't think I'd trust it.

I have some double walled fire hose, the outer will be removed to expose the virgin hose, beneath. Once I get to it, I'd be more than happy to send ya a piece.

That won't be till later this spring.

The hose looks a bit rough. Maybe kind of aggressive. I am sure you can tell by taking it in hand.

Washing fire hose is a project, I washed several pieces of hose that was never used, it hung in a fire hose cabinet for years. Even then it was full of dust. Dust is very invasive and abrasive.

It took a couple weeks of scrubbing and soaking to get the fine dust out. Once flax gets wet it swells hard, trapping the dust between the fibers, making the job harder.

Keep the washing soaking and rolling cycle going until the rinse/soaking water is clear, or your hose is not clean.

I too, would not use a hose that has been dragged on the ground.

Here is the post on how I washed firehose. Post 52-56. (Oak Fanned English Shell)

Well, I have the hose, so I would hate for it to go to waste. Probably just going to see how it turns out. Hopefully it works out. It is difficult to work on razors here, so I'm really hoping this will be a project I can finish. It is always nice being able to complete a project yourself.
