I think inlay is a tip off where they have to go. Anywhere else is an onlay.

Here is my mess, if anyone wants to read through it. I put it aside for now!
    Beginning about post 2043; http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...red-blade.html

My next experiment will be bar-top epoxy over the test-scale using a piece of a DE blade for an inlay.

Bill, if you are doing that to yourself, you may need to put a clothespin on your nose or some ear plugs in each nostril or change your diet from jerky to something different.
I strongly advise not to block the exhaust port or damage may occur!

I liked the acetone dissolving bit on that Tom, and look forward to the revisit of the project.

I have a thin Dorko inlay from the original scales the one I did in the summer came with. Saving it for another project that may or may not include that 444 blank.

I reached out to Revisor about it to see if they might finish the grind for me. Alas, they said can't do it..
So that one may sit in the drawer for a looong time.

Somebody around here did a movie about this :<0) Inlays are transferred to be onlays , yes. The Dubl Ducks were definitely poured. I have run across more than a few duck bolsters with parts below the surface. The Reapers have an aluminum wire poured flat into the inside of the show scale. Don't ask me why.
Onlays,, is a lot of hand sand/sculpting to get your material to match the brass. If you do good you get less snag. I say less because if you grab a rag with loose threads and go to scrubbing, you are challenging your luck. I have never worked with micarta but from what I understand it's hard and so would be sanding to shape. If gluing a bolster to it, super glue should work. You might want to finish the micarta with 5 layers of SG first. The only trouble I ever had with SG was on an aluminum bolster inlay.

I would suggest an ivory colored acrylic if that is the color your heart is set on. I have some cool vinyl but it gets soft when warm/hot.

I have some top secret ideas/experiments to run but for now onlays is all I have seen. Of course if your detail is somewhat simple than actual inlay would be more possible.

    sorry, got to babbling :<0)

You made that Video. I believe you made a 7 day set doing inlays. Thank-you for answering the phone. Search box should bring up the video aforementioned.

Thanks Pups. I guess I may have my work cut out for me if I go the G10 route. In all honesty, I may make Micarta and use that for material, only cause I'm cheap. Maybe spray it with polyurethane and build up a finish to the bolsters so they appear inlayed....... I'll have to see how it goes.

Just read through all this Tom. Some great ideas in there as well as the link to the Coticule site. Looks like great minds think alike with the poly spray. How did that work out in the end?

I did an inlay into some aluminum scales once which was perfectly round. Ran an endmill down in for a circular hole. I then cut a round background out of a red sticker with a gasket punch and stuck it down into the hole, laid the inlay down in and filled it with Dimensional Magic.
Worked a treat. Cannot find the pic!

It may have been OK, but the Poly cracked as I bent the test scale. Did not want to risk it after that!
