It's used in salons to work on finger & toe nails. But it works great on metals, wood, plastic scales, watch faces(plastic & glass).

I bought a nail buffing pad that does crazy things with horn scale polishing. It is like magic. Apparently one side is fine linen and the other is silk. It is pretty amazing, I have never tried it on other scale materials though.

Here is a little bit of my carving and carving practise.
Some of the pieces have deep fractures so they are unlikely to grow up to be scales.
I will try to pin them and use them, I just won't be surprised if they don't make it.

Thanks Tom. I think the ends of the last one are called a wheat sheaf, although I am very new to this so I could be way off. It was not bad carving the first one, but then getting it all the same or similar was a bit of a challenge. It does need a little more work in terms of sanding and I think I will likely buff them up. The first one is an interesting story because I had to carve two sets. The first set I had trouble getting my pattern lined up the same and I wound up with a neck scale that did not completely match the front scale, so I carved a new back to match the first and then a new front to match the other. I am not really happy with trying to carve the tulips and it is unlikely you will see any more of those from me.
I got those blanks from a seller in the UK. I am going to try a new supplier for the next bunch I purchase, but I am uncertain who that will be at this point because I am still doing research. I would be happy to buy a large lot if I can find some really great quality. I have put a little time into looking but still have not really gotten it dialed in. All in good time.

Could you laminate them on a thin piece of G10? Those scales are in need of some blades.

    Awesome work.
