Read about the, "river in the sky" that was headed your way....here, first good snowstorm of the year, and as usual in Toronto, a large segment has no clue how to drive in the snow, let alone put winter tires on their cars....
I know your area needs the water, but is it as bad as they are saying...people are talking flooding in your area?

For you Richard, here are some better pictures of the shape of the MOP scales.
Quite visible on the one with some silver and gold inlays.
Less visible on the razor scales I exposed, but worked the same.
Edit : my guess is it's due to the variety of MOP. Rodger's is white MOP, those two are pink MOP.
Perhaps pink MOP was only available in thin pieces and needed to be put together in order to make thick workable pieces.Last edited by Thaeris; 12-12-2014 at 12:19 PM.

Thanked: 4206So here I finally tried my hand on the wood lathe for the first time in a long, long time..
Made a couple pens, figuring I'd start small as I relearn the tool holds and edges required.
Made a couple out of oak, and the others out of some left over Sapele with different metal finishes. Kind of fun little projects.
Used CA for my finish and micro mesh to polish them up to 12k before I hit the wheels..
I will be trying some shave brushes for certain over the holidays. Although my knots probably won't be here till the new year. Hoping for a barracuda or stronghold chuck for Christmas. Or as I describe them to my wife, lee valley gift card..
Cheers."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."

Thanked: 2284Not sure how big of turnings you plan on doing Mike, but if you want to save a few dollars, go with the talon instead of the stronghold. Here's my Talon on a 14" maple bowl I turned.
Lovely work on the pens too!Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....

Thanked: 4206Gorgeous bowl Andrew. "Turned" out really nice..
Thx for the tip on the talon. I need a chuck for certain. May never get up to the size of what you are doing, but even for brushes and small turnings it will be so much easier than the way I'm starting out. Even this tube bed lathe may end up in the classifieds if I get into this much. The tail stock is a bit of a pain to center compared to the lathes I remember as a lad. Rockwell or Delta would be the one I'm looking out for next.
Scored myself 70 blanks of assorted hardwood, all 1" by 6", some maple, ebony, cherry, walnut, aspen, mahogany, and other African hardwoods. Some will be writing sticks, others scales. Depends on the grains I see.."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."
