Thanked: 2284They're a lot of fun, let me tell you. I just love being on mine. Here's what I dream of for a lathe.....
2436
How about turning a 24" diameter bowl over the table on the inside. Made right here in Stratford Ontario. Maybe some day!!! I can dream can't I...
I should add that at our next meet I was thinking of bringing my small lathe and doing a demo on turning brushes. Then maybe a lucky member could walk away with a new brush....Last edited by HARRYWALLY; 12-16-2014 at 04:03 AM.

A 24" bowl? How Quaint! A 12" 'throw' When I was 14 I worked for a man in his machine shop and he had a lathe that had a 72 inch throw/that's 6 feet from the center of the chuck to the rail of the bed.
I only saw him use it once and it scared the hell out of me! It was belt driven and the speeds were changed by a truck transmission.
With that said, it made an impression on me that has lasted all of the 47 years after!
Have fun with your endeavor! No room at the Boars Nest for that kind of equipmentOur house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 2284That's a big lathe, and must have been intimidating for any man!!
I'll throw my change in a piggy bank and maybe by the time I'm retired I'll have the $7k required to purchase it. Then convince my wife to park on the drive way. "Just think of the nice things I can make you honey!! Salad bowls that hold enough lettuce for the whole neighborhood!!!"Last edited by HARRYWALLY; 12-16-2014 at 04:22 AM.

Oh Roy, that looks like a really cool lathe! Oneway all the way!!!!!!
As far the one with a 6' throw powered with a truck transmission, that would have scared me too!!! Once fired up, I would have to step back!!!!!!!!
It took great big balls to operate that baby!!!!!!Last edited by engine46; 12-16-2014 at 05:23 AM.

He was turning down the pivots of some hydraulic rams from a D8 CAT and he was just so calm while those rams were swinging like crazy!
He'd put in a bid on a job that would require the lathe and he figured that the money from the job would pay for the lathe and make him some money so when he was told he had the job he bought the lathe then was told that he had been out bid. So he had the lathe but no profit. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

Thanks! Most anyone in the fabrication business has it happen. Some special tool or another is required and the bid is accepted and....Even more often the final result sits there for months and the cussed-tomer refuses all communication. Special orders are the worst! ask Pix! I do custom un-obtainium work for vintage home espresso machines and have made tools to make a part, with daily communication with the buyer and....and...and..........
