That's gorgeous! The scales look awesome and the blade looks brand new. I'm sure that will be a nice shave in the morning, enjoy!

An awesome day checking the mail to receive and nice little package from sharptonn with a few possible scales to match up with the Engels Wedge I've been working on as well as some other goodies in there for some future projects to keep me busy. Really put a smile on my face today! Thanks sharptonn, you're quite a guy, kind and generous!

This seems a pretty fair match and will be almost dead on for color and "grain" once cleaned and polished. I wanted to make sure the holes could line up before doing that work though. So I followed sharptonn's method found here http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...le-halves.html in which he talks about matching up holes that don't quite match up by enlarging the holes a little in the right direction. Later I will shape the bigger one down to fit and match the slightly smaller original scale.

Also going to start working on refinishing this cool box I found last weekend at the flea market for 2 bucks. It's lined with felt so I think it would be excellent for storing some rocks! A little sanding and then a few coats of something to protect it... any suggestions on what to use?

I would start that box with a little light scraper work and see where it goes. It is either a pretty decent sized box or those are really small cotis. It looks like it probably has some really nice grain to it. Travel lightly and get it to show you the way. With a scraper you can get the old finish mostly off and likely get the grain to pop a little without requiring much wood to be removed. It has some kind of a scrape on the top that is hard to see how deep it is.

Thanks, yeah it's a descent sized box 11.5 x 5 inches, the cotis are 7 inches long. The mark on the top is gunk from a sticker so that will come right off. After scraping I'm unsure what to use as a finish though. All I have right now is high gloss poly, not sure if that's the best thing for it

Please do not put high gloss poly on this fine box, it deserves better then a coat of plastic on it. More then likely it was probably stained followed by oil and waxed.

Yes, those are the scales that Shaun carved, that is way beyond my skill level. Yes, posted it in show and tell iirc. Thanks, took a while to find a blade that would do justice to Shaun's skill in carving those bone scales.

I am thinking you could likely make that wood glow with a build up of oil and wax. That being said an oil and wax "build up" is several very very thin layers. You could try a shellac finish but it tends to be a little trickier and would require a serious commitment. You will be amazed what you can do with a few light coats of danish oil and some clear furniture wax.

I have some pure tung oil I use for scales sometimes, would that do the trick followed by some wax then? Or is Danish oil better/different? Thanks
