LOL. I have split every set of scales that I have tried to get the pin flush with the collarless scales. I have since felt I needed to have them slightly elevated. I have to admit that it is really hard to get them just so on the sides of the pin, so it does not feel rough when handling them. I must admit I have not come close to perfecting the collarless pinning, but have been trying more and more.

I saw that as you completed that nice set of bone scales, Mike! I sorta cringed! I would certainly bust a scale if I attempted that!

But you did it!

Shaun, I agree that the slight 'catching' at the edge of the peen bugs me and is what keeps me tapping them till they are flush, or flush at the edges.

Looking at images of collarless razors on the net, they all seem similar to the ivory one Tom zoomed in on showing a very clear dome still so I think flush is purely a personal decision, not the norm from old builders. I do like the look though.

Sanding them flush I think would risk marring the scale surface unless you were going all the way back up in grits. In which case, no problem. it's an idea I might try if I leave too much pin and know there is no more room to spread inside the scales.
Also pretty sure true collarless will only work well on hard scale stock. Softer stuff probably won't draw tight enough without splitting. At least that's my thinking Based on experience so far..

Ya, Shaun, I feel you, BUT as things get tight, take it to the buffer in several directions very lightly and smooth the rough edges till it has a smooth feel.
Then scrub the buffing compound off of everything! I do the same with collars a lot!

That's a good idea with the buffer!

I truly think that is how the Sheffield Masters did it on theirs. Unless they had piss ants with tiny hammers smoothing things out!

I'll stick with my collarless illusion washer for now.

The last pic shows a true collarless pinning at the wedge, and my illusion at the pivot.

HEY! That blade looks familiar!

You guys are making me cringe at what i did with the Ivo scales i found two weeks back. I must have tapped this thing for almost two hours, taking a few breaks of course.. trying to get it flush. The pivot pin had about 1/16" of play in it either way when i got it.

I got that sucker in there though.
