Thanked: 4827G-10 and carbon fiber from https://www.alphaknifesupply.com
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

The carbon fiber I got was really thin. I got some .25mm thick & they said it could be wrapped around a cylinder shape. I also got some .50mm but it won't go around anything, not that what we do needs to. They also have it adhesive backed or no adhesive. They have it thicker than what I got also.
This was a satin finish but the .25mm was the only satin finish they had at the time. The .50mm is a glossy finish.

Thanked: 4206That carbon fiber looks very sleek, but to me is an automotive, or knife handle finisher. Need to order some and try for myself. Bendable sheets sound intriguing in their potential applications.
Nice view outback, I'm envious. Haven been out on the water since May myself, and most likely won't before the fall either.
Finally a day off to do what I want. And we get rain for the first time in a month it seems.
Ahh well, I too received a box of busted blades from Mariner MikeT. Might be a good day to take a closer look.
All of them looked like good projects for this thread, shorties, skinnies, and one French specimen with three replacement blades to boot.

Just tootin' around, posting on SRP?
I finally have a chance to upload my shorties I fixed up a few weeks ago. These will be my travel blades, so I didn't put a whole lot of effort removing pitting. Plus, the clear scaled one is incredibly thin and has an etching "Eight Brothers Tobacco", which comes up as a tobacco store based in Milwaukee way back when. I over tightened the bejesus out of them, on accident, but they have loosened up a touch. Great learning experience and probably freaked out my neighbors a bit. To cut the blades, I used a damp face cloth on a cutting board with everything clamped together. I do believe I saw Outback post his set-up and I completely stole it, thanks for that! The clear scaled blade took *forever* to hone past pitting and even then, I had to stop before I got to more rust spots. The black scales is still in process of getting honed right, but I dislike how I cut the toe. And the scales. I have a few more busted blades, so that one may just be a memento to my very first shorty until I run out of projects to get to it. Without further ado, cell phone pics!
You can see my attempts to just grind off the steel with a stone dremel attachment, this actually made it more difficult to get a good cut. This steel was harder to cut than I thought. I've worked with a bunch of mild and stainless steel, quite impressed with heat treatments.
Had to be guided in at first, it seems to have loosed a touch and centers better all on its own.Last edited by dinnermint; 08-16-2016 at 03:24 PM.

Ulrik uses carbon fiber liners on some razors like mine. I believe it is to reinforce the Desert Ironwood burl he used. I believe it is the only one he uses the liners on but I could be wrong. Can't forget the Boker Elite. I prefer the horn, bone, Ivory & some other materials they used. I did it to keep the blade from gouging the wood when closing. My only other option is to warp the scales. Here's the Koraat.

Stabilizers reshaped, and ready for some high honing, to clean up and even the edge, on a Nani 220.
