But take another look with proper lighting and no attempts to hide things...

suddenly the chatter marks from somebody grinding merrily away with a dremmel or poor skills on a grinding wheel become visible.
Its gonna take some work to make that go away (when its even possible)
I got a old guy messed up more than that. It didn't have any heat marks and I could see and feel vertical ridges on one side. Lots of work for you ahead I know. I am posting my progress here. http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...ml#post1099213

I always love the razors that people take really low grit sandpaper to to get rid of that "dark staining" aka patina. I picked up an old .22 once that someone took some steel wool to it and tried to remove bluing cause they thought it was staining.

Ever been walking along and feel something soft under your show all of a sudden ? Well I stepped in it today. I swear though 2 pics were added after I bid on it.

I remember worrying about getting the chip out of the edge.

I couldn't see it from this side so I thought it was small.

Then after I win and pay I go back to look at it again. Naturally.

I don't think I would have missed that. I might have but I sent the seller a note and asked if he posted the other 2 pictures after I bid on it. If he says they were there then I will eat it but I wish there was a way to tell when the page has been edited. Or is it even possible to add pictures once the auction is started ? I am going to have to sell some stuff to learn the other side.

Plenty of steel remaining to take that chip out, and good practice.

You cannot edit the photos or description on the auction once it gets bids. You can add a note to it, but not change anything that was already there.

    "never been repaired or reconditioned"

Damned thing looks like an oil slick on a puddle.

What causes that? Buffing mistake? Is it repairable?

Yes, overheated while buffing. I think you could have the blade retempered if it were really valuable.

I have seen some old tools that formed a patina like that after spending years in a garage unused, but since it looks like it is in the same spots on both sides it might be from heat. Someone with more knowledge on the subject might chime in.
