Well i would say that the right side of the leather is much rougher than my other strops, but i guess you could smooth it with sandpaper. To be honest i have never used it as i was going to save it for some chromium oxide when i got round to it.
I am certain it would function fine as a basic strop though.

That's very strange.
The plain leather version he sells (which I have) is quite smooth on the using side, I would equate it to an entry level Dovo strop (the plain leather one ) with leather that is perhaps a little lower quality but smooth, and still works. Nowhere near what you are describing from yours.
Now I'm very curious how the 2 sided strop I ordered will look. Sandpaper you say? Please don't take this the wrong way, but I hope you got a dud and mine will be great....

Well the other strops i have were very smooth and this is more of a belt texture. seeing as it has come up, i am now sanding away at the leather to see what happens, and it appears to leave the surface similarly buffed like my other, better strops. I hope i did just get a dud one though, it would be a shame if all the strops have to be cut up to access the usable side!! well i guess they are priced at a level that it really isn't a big problem if they are a bit on the bad side. I think an ideal price for my needs of experimentation, as i can just throw it if it doesn't fit my needs

Got your strop today, thanks wojeck! suprinsingly fast shipping to canada! Oh and by the way, same situation, the smoother side appears to be on the back side under the linen strap. I guess i'll sand the rough side to see what happens, what grit should i use. Worse case scenario i'll cut out the linen side. I was planning to use this strop for paste anyway so no big deal.

Hmmm. Now I'm starting to wonder.
If indeed these are intended for military use as I suspect, perhaps the linen/rough leather strop is supposed to be used in a similar fashion to the Illinois 837 (I think, don't have it in front of me) Russian leather strop, which also has a rough texture on the stropping surface?
I don't know. Something to mess around with when the first 2 sided strop arrives.

Hey Fred, how long was the transit time to Canada? I'm looking forward to holding this thing.

Suprisingly fast no more then two weeks, i got it today, i dont remember exactly when i ordered it, but it couldnt have been more then two weeks ago. Might even be one week.

I just tried sanding the rough side too, and it just seems to remove loads of leather without smoothing the surface at all. Maybe it is meant to be used on this rough side. I'm not that experienced in this so maybe It is meant to be like this.

This is sounding more and more like my Illinois Russian strop, the stropping surface is rough, and unfortunately these days, its one of those things where even the manufacturer may not even know why they are made this way, just that they keep on making them. I've heard various things, and there are even texts about what to do (I've clogged up a pumice stone and spent hours with lather and a large bottle) to them.
Ultimately just like the rest of this stuff we are having to re-learn, we'll just have to experiment with it. Lucky for us, the razors aren't expensive, either....time to play.

By the way, the plain strop (no linen) is a smooth surface strop; more like we are used to using.
