Thanked: 79After looking at the 2 sided strop, I actually think the side with the nap is the side we are intended to strop on. Anyone here who owns an Illinois 827 Russian leather strop knows what I am talking about...however the jury is still out where it falls into the routine at.

But this rough side has a different texture depending on which way you rub it. Surely this would result in each side being stropped slightly differently, and unevenly.

Thanked: 79Nick,
perhaps, but I noticed the same thing on my Illinois strop as well. The other strop available is a smooth leather strop, but I'm really not sure the actual usage of the rough leather ones just yet, either. Perhaps they are a little more aggressive(?) I really don't know.
Going to mess with mine this evening after work perhaps, and look at it under the scope.

Thanked: 1Just got the 2 straights. Def gonna need some time with the norton, but I dig the metal scales.
Maybe I'll have to give the blades a shot later, I think I need to take them to a 1000 grit.
edit: Couldn't resist, I took one of the wapienica razors and I scraped a bevel in with the 4k, ran about 30 or so laps on the 8k and finished on a barber hone, and I got a pretty darned nice shave already!
Great buy.Last edited by Friggin Joe; 04-02-2007 at 07:48 PM.

Thanked: 0Has anyone received the Arkasas stones? I just received mine, but not knowing much about hones yet, can't really say much about it other than it was brand new, still sealed in plastic wrapper. My second razor had no dings and the scales were nice and straight.

Thanked: 79Take it to the 1,000 grit? really?
Mine needed nothing that couldn't easily be done with a 4k/8k (thanks David) or even a barber hone (and a lot more time...which is what I did...I AM going to get a new Norton...soon....really....honestly.)
I worked a swap, so hopefully I'll be playing with the Arkansas stones next...

1000 grit would definately be overkill for these razors. A 10-10 pyramid with light even pressure on the Norton 4K/8K should be more than enough to get these razors shave ready. 10 passes on the coticule and 10-20 passes on chromium oxide would be icing on the cake.

I have not received the Arkansas stones yet (they will be going to John P. when they arrive) but there is some information on them in one of the articles in the library (the long one from the other forum). The article says that the black hard Arkansas stones are the finest of the Arkansas and supposedly they are good natural stones for honing razors.

One had chips near the toe but they're gone with the 4k.
It shaves pretty well with less time than I'd anticipated.
I'm still new to the stuff, so I expected to have to take it to the 1k, but anough laps on the 4k wasn't frustratingly long. I like these razors!
