Well my second brush attempt failed miserably. I had it all done and started sanding. There was a really small line I couldn't get out so I decided to use my scraper to see if I could smooth it out. Instant catch. Good thing this ebony is on sale.. Name: 1477941249817760096712.jpg

Been there and done by that! Ebony/ blackwood is really easy to split or crack. I never found a cure except extra care. I made tampers and some fancy woodwork for the espresso crowd.
Enjoy the trip, you will find your way as you go!

Yea, good to know I'm not the only one. I was so angry I could have launched my lathe across the yard... I'm cooled off now, but going to hold off for a few days before I try again.

Is it split, or did you just trash the bead? If it's not split, it's not a total loss. Could be glued up into another handle....

Its not split, but a lot of chunks came out. I think it is too close to the center hole to take any more off. I might be able to salvage a section of it, but I think I'll leave it on my desk as a reminder not to be stupid!

I know this thread is called "first" brush, but I'm going to keep posting all my new brushes instead of starting new threads. This one came out stunning! Lignum vitae finished with danish oil. It's still setting, and I may do one more soak before I buff it. I wanted a large handle because I like the feel and it's a 30mm knot going in. Enjoy.

    Nice !

Danish oil is great stuff, really makes a hunk of wood look warm and classy. Looks great. Thats a big ole knot! What knot is going in there?

This one is getting the Chinese 30mm 2 band from ebay. Dang thing took a month to show up! Here's a pic of the knot in the handle. This handle is huge, but I wanted it that way. It almost feels like holding onto a baseball lol
