The bottom line is what happened to these old age survivors before Social Security existed? They either moved in with family or died in poverty. Eliminate it or drastically cut it and that will once again be the outcome. That was at a time when the savings rate in the U.S was astoundingly high by modern standards. I'm sure the Conservative view is too bad no savings suffer. You didn't plan for retirement too bad suffer.

Another thing to remember is even though folks are living much longer that doesn't mean we have a huge population of 70 and 80 year olds who are as fit as a fiddle. Most have serious health issues by that age and can't just keep working. Many do because they have no choice but shouldn't.

    The problem with "Obamacare"

    Comes from two facts

"We have to pass this bill to see what is in the bill that we had to lie to the American people about because it would have never passed if the truth was told.. So we have to depend on the stupidity of the American voter to get this passed"...

I combined two people into that statement and eliminated a ton of superfluous argument,, but those two things are at the core of the issue with the ACA

Now about 46% of the US population knew it was a Lie and voted that way so we can't be blamed for it...

This also glosses over all the "Fixes" and outright deceptions built into the plan, that we are finding out everyday...

It isn't that Americans don't want a better system, or are not a giving people willing to help those less fortunate, but we would like to know the truth...

That sounds very familiar. I hope you don't take betting pointers from the last guy who was to make it happen.

Thank you for saying exactly what I feel about all this. I don't have a problem with any of it, it's just the way it has been done. Your post 'nails it' for me.

It never ceases to amaze me that a statement as simple as this one will BAFFLE politicians . . . That inability to tell people the unvarnished truth, even (especially?) if it is something they may not like hearing, is why politicians are held in such low regard. It is my belief that the lies began as soon as "Politician" came to be seen as a "career path" rather than a public service.

I dunno. The original post in this thread didn't mention anything about truth or lies, just that their taxes had gone up, it's a ripoff, and someone is making a fortune

When Social Security was devised it didn't pass easily and most probably didn't want it but I don't know anyone who dislikes it now (except for many conservatives). When medicare passed many didn't want that either but I don't know anyone who has it and would give it up (even conservatives). When WWll was going on there were plenty who didn't want us involved. if it wasn't for Pearl Harbor I have serious doubts we would have entered the war. You can find plenty of examples of the Govt doing what is unpopular or not wanted at the time.

Obamacare is the same. Down the road people will love it. The issue these days is the partisan goings on and all the hate circulating and the unprecedented money available to invent the "truth" and the gullible folks who will believe it.
I'm sorry but a) I don't agree that government HAD to step in and do anything here. Government enthusiasm outweighed the public demand by a mile. The dems wanted this and they wanted you to want it too. Hence all the lies they put out there to make it happen. And b) the last solution I want for something like this is a government solution. You're right, people want their medicare and SS. Why? Because they have been paying into them their ENTIRE WORKING LIVES. I have individual line items on my pay stub for these two programs. Its not the benefit that people are opposed to, its the imbalance of what you pay in to what you get out and the inevitability of the programs insolvency. Do I want SS when I'm of age? Yes. I've paid into it I want something out of it. But if I had the choice to never pay into it, I'd have taken that. I think most younger people would agree because they feel that it won't be there for them when the time comes anyway. I feel that way about Obamacare too. It will ruin the flawed system we have and replace it with government waste, empty promises, and insolvency....all while you are dying in a hospital somewhere. Down the road people won't love it. They simply won't have anything to compare it to. And just like SS, they will want SOME benefits because they are paying for it and its the only game in town. But that's not the same thing as loving it. None of this should be a surprise. It was all constructed this way. That's why only now are people complaining that their taxes increased and that they are now feeling some of the pain. All of this was timed so that the pain would be felt after the second presidential election and the following mid term. No one "invented" truth for a gullible audience more than the dems did prior to passing it.

The agent suggested something that, quite frankly, was shocking to me: He suggested that my wife and I purchase a new health insurance policy for ourselves and he said, based on our income, our kids would most likely qualify for medical assistance; which is the same program that those on welfare have for their medical needs.

This should not come as a surprise. This is what its intended to do.

While I would love for that to be true, I doubt that it will be dismantled completely.....if at all.

I really do think it will be taken away, here's why:
    A) republicans and conservatives hate it, mostly due to its unconstitutional creation and implementation.
    B) a Democrat wins and the country experiences a civil war

    Either way it's gone....
