Doing nothing is MUCH better than doing something that's wrong. First rule of holes: "When you find yourself in one -- stop digging".
Enforce the laws we already have.
Secure the border.
STOP THE LEAK BEFORE YOU START MOPPING.

If the current laws were written logically they would be enforceable. You can see the situations we have today are beyond the SCOPE of the current laws.
Hence the need for reform now we are back to status quo. The current laws are "a steaming heaping pile". You try to enforce crap you get crap which is where we are....

I will highlight some issue with
Legal Immigration
- Skilled workers H-1 B Visas - quota Currently 60000. One the 1st day that the visa opened for the year 2007 the DHS / INS??/ got 175000 applications from companies from all across the U.S. This was just on the first day and the dates remain open until October. This means that skilled workers, Masters , PhD students, who have studied in the U.S. will go out of the country. This is how we keep loosing our competitive edge to other countries
- Sponsorship of Family / Spouses / Parents etc.
A green card holder must show that they have the appropriate resources and income to support family who want to migrate to US. Even after showing the appropriate documents families have to wait atleast 5 years sometimes upto 15 years before they can legally enter country. Does this promote illegal immigration? Yes it does. 30% of illegal immigrants did NOT come across the border
- Low skilled workers - There is no denying there is a definite market for low-skilled. But there is no viable legal way in which they can work here. Which promotes illegal immigration.
You live in the Atlanta and so do I. I can bet you
The house you live in was built by an illegal immigrant.
The office you are working in gets cleaned and its trash picked up by an illegal. The road you drive on was built probably by an illegal.
Your lawn may be mowed by one.
You may be served food at a restaurant by one.
Your crisply ironed shirt was done by one.
They raided the INS building in Atlanta because it had illegal workers doing construction on it.....you get my point.
These people are poor and desolate who do not have a voice. A majority of them are good hard working people. Yes they speak another language, Yes they are different from you and I but they are human beings not our slaves. They live in the shadows. And it is so easy to piss all over them and make them scapegoats. I bet you could most of us could not spend one day living in the shoes of one of these people.
No I am not hippie, and this is not a bunch of tree hugging hippie crap. This is the reality.
National Security - In the current system there no way to know who is living here. There are are 12-15 million here illegally rounding them up and deporting is just NOT an option. There could be potential terrorists among us who also live in the shadows. I would want to bring the majority of the illegals out of the shadows and spend our resources chasing terrorists and criminals, rather than chasing construction workers and day laborers.
This is the status quo ....
and we will continue to be exposed to security threat and certain socio-economic problems until there is some reform.
