I couldn't remember wher I read it earlier, but now I know again:
Statue of Liberty National Monument
Emma Lazarus’ Famous Poem
A poem by Emma Lazarus is graven on a tablet
within the pedestal on which the statue stands.
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I believe the general population of America feels this way! I know I do!!
I think the problem comes when what is offered and what could be had with a little diligence is instead taken with contempt and no concern for their fellow man!!
These illegals who come to our country don't appear to want to partake in our freedom to do what is right and responsible but instead plunder America for everything they can get and take it back to their homeland! We're a big country and can handle this to some degree, but if things keep going as they are we will be a broken down corpse of a country and those beautiful words from that beautiful poem will come to nothing and mean nothing!

Illegality and sending money home are the two things that can be problematic for a country regarding immigration (generally speaking).
Some time ago I read a study that the 'stealing jobs' argument is a false argument as long as
a) the immigrants working the jobs pay taxes, ss etc...
b) the immigrants spend their money in the country they live in.
As long as these 2 are true, the money that gets earned gets spent and the immigrants do not have a negative effect on employment status in the coutnry as a whole.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I have yet to speak with one American that was anti-immigration....and I have yet to speak with one American that was pro-ILLEGAL immigration....
...as long as you ask for, and are granted permission, then America and Americans will welcome you...hell, as pretty much every poster above has allueded to....we are a nation of immigrants....but the illegals are, in effect, stealing our freedoms, sending their money out of the country and not paying their fare share.....and, my personal opinion, are stealing a place in line form the peiople who choose to attempt to enter legally.
...and Coully and all of the rest who have extended their feelings, thank you for your kind thoughts and words...we'll hang in there...just a minor setback....

For me it's the whole assimilation thing ---- when you have large groups of people, thinking they are reclaiming territory that was once theirs and therefore need not assimilate into the larger American society then it's just plain suicide for the rest of us to allow it. It might very well be the beginning of the end of th U.S as a cohesive unit -a world power. Maybe some people want this ---but I don't, even though I know it will happen eventually. In a sense this is our own version of the "barbarians" invading Rome -- a large group of fairly privileged citizens, forgetting what is was like to be Roman, not willing to fight for Rome combined with the "immigration" of Germanic tribes, etc that did not see themselves as Roman, did not adhere to Roman ways, leading over time to the decay of the Roman Empire. What's that statement about forgetting history?

Many years ago when I was starting out and assigned to the new York INS office one of the first people I arrested was a guy working as an engineer for one of the national broadcasting companies. He was making good money too, more than me. As I recall he was from Germany and he told me "you know what you Americans are the most stupid people in the world. You allow anyone to come here break the laws and reward them for doing it. You all deserve what you get"
And you know he was right. We have it in our power to resolve these problems but we won't.
I always hear on these news shows when the experts say the poor illegals are taken advantage of and they help support us by paying their taxes and social security. Well every Illegal I every arrested payed their taxes alright but the problem is they all declare about 10 exemptions. You do the math how much is withheld from your paycheck when you declare 10 exemptions. Few illegals file income tax forms and those that do get the little they pay back and use false names anyway. The social security taxes they pay go into a special account that is apart from what we all pay and is held in suspense indefinately. Of course many illegals work off the books anyway so both they and the employers profit.
I live in New Mexico and 30% of the state prison population is made up of illegal aliens. That doesn't include the legal ones.
Yes we are stupid aren't we?No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
