I don't have much to add --- except to say this guy has some good articles on the subject as well as other timely issues: http://www.victorhanson.com/articles/index.html

Wish I knew more but I'd just be stating what has already been stated

Thank you for those kind words and thoughts, sir.

...but this thread isn't about me (nor should it be)...I only posted that because, well, my personal experiences just seemed timely to this thread.

I guess it wasn't really a setback..I mean, it's going to take as long as it's going to take.....it's just, the way they say things create false expectations, and then, when you get a cold slap of reality, it takse some time to adjust.

    Thanks again....all of you...

    -Lou

Cantonese isn't an official language here in Vancouver but I still get to hear it at the airport and see it on the streets signs. That's how it is. Nature strives for complexity. It's the surest way to guarantee survival. Better get used to it. The alternative is hegemony.

To my way of thinking, we may be getting a little off track here....the controversial portions of the New Immigration bill are how the ILLEGAL (read criminal....those who bypassed the legal procedure to immigrate and illegally snuck across the border) immigrants are handled. The new bill grants amnesty (ie forgiveness of the crime) as long as they register and pay an administrative fee/fine. So, the illegals that thumbed their noses at American laws are suddenly granted legal status, while those trying to conform to the law remain waiting in line.

Trust me, X, it's NOT about diversity or culture....most Americans welcome LEGAL immigrants....it's about granting amnesty to lawbreakers.

...at least, that's MY view on it.

Yep --how did a discussion about illegal immigration take on a racist/ cultural hegemony direction. The little cartoon there would be more accurate if it showed someone a few notches above a redneck (American or immigrant legally waiting in line) pointing at an illegal immigrant and saying go home.

Personally, I wish every American knew a few languages --- but for sure knew English and somehow identified with being an American ----- that's it ---beyond that bring in some new genes into the gene pool and spice it up with a little cultural diversity. (not that we need help in the realms of cultural diversity).
