I had many things to consider when working on 'em.
    When did it first start?
Did it start after doing some work on the bike?
    Did it do it :
*when cold, hot or all the time?
*when on the side stand or when driving or both?
*at a certain RPM or all the time?
    *at a certain speed?
There are more questions to consider but that is an example.
It depends if it is coming from inside the motor, primary or transmission. That can be tricky at times & sometimes can be coming from the other side of the bike. If it's a twin cam, the cam chain tensioners usually begin to go around 45k-50k unless someone previously upgraded to the hydraulic tensioners.

I remember we had a salesman bring a new bike to the service area & they asked me but I was just going to lunch so they gave it to the guy who had the most comebacks. He said the factory left off an exhaust cover clamp which was a lie. I did have a quick look at it before going to lunch & it was a metallic sound on the outside of it, possibly the exhaust. The next day, Nick, the salesman had it sold & brought it back in there saying it was still doing it, so I walked over to it & so did another good tech, Josh. As he reached over & twisted the throttle, I saw the rear o2 sensor moving, it was loose. I then looked at the front one when Josh throttled it again & the front o2 sensor was also loose. The guy who originally worked on it was looking at me with daggers in his eyes because I said it loud enough for everyone to hear since it was running. That fixed it & we (Josh & I) didn't even clock any time for it. The metallic sound was the exhaust alright but both o2 sensors were loose. When things like that happened on a new bike, we would say it was done on a Monday or a Friday. Monday workers come in hungover from the weekend & Fridays, they couldn't wait for the weekend to start.

I'm sure Mike has certain questions he goes through when working on a boat.

Yeah...pretty much the same order, too.
A series of quick eliminators/ narrow down the source.

A lot of times its just a loose nut, behind the wheel/ handle bars.

Actually I should have said background.

I said hey mike did you get that picture I sent you yesterday. He said What are you talking about and it took me a few seconds to see that it was on his screen!

With different things like ages, background, geography, things like humor can actually get pretty complicated!

Around here we usually do a pretty good job of understanding.

Lots of words but here are some pictures unrelated!

I have a smaller rubber hammer for bikes. Start tapping around and when you hit it, you will know it! Then...A big plastic hammer for cars!

Been there--Done that but to no avail. As my dad was so fond of saying "Ya gotta be smarter than the thing your working on" and this iron horse must be smarter than me.
