First qualified as a joiner but being young I chased the money and went to work on site as a carpenter. Built a boat in my back yard which a guy near me saw the build take place and asked me to apply for a job at the boat yard he was foreman of. Did. Learned the trade over the years and decided to go it alone one year.
Never enough work to keep me busy all year so in the off times I hop back on site doing mainly first fix carpentry and cut roof framing. Did evening classes to qualify as a Plasterer and plaster moulder.
Passions are: Wooden things, Tools, Dogs, Boats anything with a blade, pipes and fine tobaccos, oh and the wife

Thanked: 1I'm a retired cop (25 years LAPD). Before that I spent 4 years in the Marine Corps and worked in construction for 3 years. I retired in 1992 and moved up behind the Redwood Curtain in Humboldt County, California.
When I retired, my plan was to spend a lot more time mountaineering, flyfishing, etc. However, a back surgery in 1996 took a toll on my climbing activities, and the fishing up here "ain't what it used to be."
But all is well. I've had time to smoke a lot of expensive cigars. And I even learned how to shave like me grandpa did.

Thanked: 0I work as a security officer in a large hospital. I spend far to much time with psychiatric patients, criminals and vagarants. On the plus side, I have unfettered access to a kettle. The job breaks down into:
- 95% hot drinks, laughter, flirting and Trivial Pursuit.
- 5% bollock-shrinking terror, followed by violence.
Best job I've ever had, though I'm away recovering from an injury at the moment.

I am a close to a degree in psychology and another in philosophy w/ a concentration in religion.
Eventually I plan to do cognitive behavioral therapy and research on some ideas I have.
I work at an environmental lab to pay the bills. I check stuff for carcinogens mostly.
In my spare time I'm building a house for the wife and I. Hopefully that will be through with in a few more months.

I am a web and graphic designer. I ran my own freelance business for a couple years while still going to school, but things slowed down so I had to get a real job to pay the bills. I am currently working as an ecommerce web designer for Crosstown Traders, which is now owned by Charming Shoppes Inc. Basically, I do all the design for Lane Bryant Woman.
The ecommerce devision of the company is new, and is growing fast with the backing of a 4 billion dollar a year corporation which is completely reworking how they handle their ecommerce side of the business. Suffice to say, it is a good oppertunity for growth in my field.
I still do some freelance design on the side. My website can be found here.
I also enjoy beer (microbrews) and wine a great deal (Italian red wines mainly). Pipes and cigars are another love. My father is a carpenter with his own cabinetry business, so naturally I have a background in that as well.
Despite the fact that I work in a technological industry, I have a great love for the classic way of doing things.Last edited by Kentriv; 09-29-2007 at 08:54 PM.

Fin, that's actually a very cool job...it's hard to find a real butcher nowadays...someone who can recommend a good cut of meat to suit the occasion....and it is definitely one of the professions where sharp blades are appreciated.
When I worked in the kitchen, I was always having to finish trimming meat because the "butcher" the restaurant used didn't really care - volume over quality. Alternatively, some of the best meat came from a meat supplier in a very bad neighborhood...but when you went in to buy, say, leg of lamb...you knew it was fresh as it still have the hoof on it...and they would trim it to perfection...
Ok, now I'm hungry......
