Thanked: 485The guy in The Shaver Shop near me told me to strop on canvas and THEN leather. Sort of reminded me of my level of expertise selling sports equipment as a 16 year old a couple of years ago. OK, more than a couple....
Sounds to me like Mick should be a training consultant for The Shaver Shop!Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 983I still think they should all put in the time to learn the art before they start giving the advice. Most of them know the right words, but fail to understand the reason or the how of it all.

Use the old eagle eye.
If you see one you like ask for it in an unopened box.
If there are no unopened boxes ask for a discount.
If no discount walk away...
A razor that has been inspected by a lot of visitors
will need honing but as long as it has no cracks or
chips it will hone and shave just fine.

Thanked: 983I actually wasn't there to buy a razor as such. They're much cheaper elsewhere anyway. I just like to go in to look at what they have in stock. Seems that most stores (franchises) carry some slightly different things to each other. And information gathered from the sales people regarding what they do or don't carry comes in extremes. One girl I spoke to (probably having a bad day) rudely stated she had never heard of C&E Nomad, even though the store had stocked it just two weeks before, and more to the point that the Shaver shop had never stocked that item (even though I saw they advertised it online). I only asked as the shelves were looking a little threadbare that day, and I had a genuine wish to purchase some for a mates birthday.A month after I needed to buy it, I happened to be in the same shopping centre, and when I walked past, I noticed they had heaps of stocks in. Including Nomad. Sorry Shaver shop, you lost that sale to the internet and Mama Bears shaving soaps.

Thanked: 983I don't know for sure, but the 16 year old (that was working with the bloke about my age) hinted that he has a cut-throat and uses it. Mind you, he wasn't close to having to shave. Maybe in a few years he'll have some noticable need to shave, but I commend him if he does use a cut-throat. Seems the old ways are being seen as 'cool' by the younger generation.

Good to see this thread still up and going. I will wait for a few more months before I conglomerate all the info into my initial post.
Also, if you do happen to be in Darwin, they have just open a Shave Shop in Casuarina Shopping Square. Just in case you need a tub of Proraso, since everything else there is over priced and pointless for a straight shaveman. A place in the city called Alfreds also sells Dovo razors at their usual price.

+1 for Lie-Nielsen Toolworks Australia | Home and Men's Biz | Men's Skin Care and Shaving Products
Both have very fast shipping, although I thought it somewhat strange that Lie-Nielsen don't actually calculate postage costs prior to purchasing. It wasn't a problem anyway, as postage was very reasonable and lightning fast.
