Thanked: 4207Kind of exciting to be buying stuff with “final” in its name.
Sort of implies good things..
And if you look close, the test smear of my soon to be colour is on the lid of the paint can.
And I applied my por15 to the exterior of my repaired window box, so it can go back in now.
Also clad my tool box floor, and lid with the same rust protection.
Getting ready to clean out the shop, again, and wash down all the parts pre prep.
Maybe the Labor Day weekend will smell like paint round here. .
Although I am committed to a brisket bbq Saturday so maybe not..

Thanked: 4207Well, it might become my favorite colour once it’s on the car
It’s woodland green, an original green offered on the car in 51. Solid pigment, looks good on a couple old chairs I tested first so I’m going to give it a go.
It’s 1 stage, so I could just buff it and stop, but it will take clear coat as well.
So if I opt to lay some clear down, based on my successes or failures with the prime and base it’ll work, and If I screw up the clear I can wet sand back to base coat and still call it done.

Thanked: 4207Actually it’s PPG 2246, which was Morris Garages Woodland green in the 50s. It became VW Elm Green in the late 60s and early 70s, but was the same shade of paint. My guy had a heck of a time recreating it cause even VW stopped using it 50 years ago.
But he also gave me the recipe card he followed, quoting modern pigments so i can always have it made again, or in touch up sizes.

Mike I think you will want at least some kind of clear even if it’s a matte or dull finish, just makes for an overall protection on your investment. But it’s your car. I love the green and would have shown concerns getting away from what that car was. Now I expect to be able to look down those panels with a light on them to verify you blocked them smooth!

Thanked: 4207I agree tc, regarding the clear. Gonna try to apply it even though they didn’t back in the 50s. Want the shine, and protection.
historically I wasn’t very lucky layin down clear cleanly so I bought paint with a fail safe plan in mind.
Now last time I tried was with a traditional gun, not hvlp so I’m hoping it’ll be better results this time.
Got a 1.5mm tip on my new gun so it should give me good volume of liquid and control.
Should all come down to dialing in the settings, and technique."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."

Yep hvlp is the way to go. Even when I go flat finish i still clear it, using a matte then I knock it down with 600 grit. Then some polish, the clear protects the color from fading. Or make it shiny!
