I tried one of the tobaccos I ordered from Germany. The brand is Meistermischung and this blend is their 99. They have 10 blends available in these tin's, with double digit numbers, which make little sense to me. 99 is a mixture of Red Kentucky, Virginia, Turkish, Carolina Black and Syrien Latakia. The pre-light draw was fruity sweet and the smoke had a great aroma and quite a nicotine punch. I smoked this in my early 1980's Boswell estate.

Bob, do you have the luxury of brick and mortar pipe/tobacco shops in your neck of the woods ? The last bona fide pipe shop around here was 25 miles south of me. Open 35 years and closed last May. Guy said he could no longer compete with the internet, and that tobacco tax had risen to the point where business was in the tank.

Saw this Radice Wick in Edgewater NJ back in the early '90s. The guy in the pipe shop wouldn't budge and I paid the three hundred bucks. Guess I got my money's worth if you figure how many bowls I've enjoyed in it. Radice and Ascorti worked for Castello so I've read. Whether they developed the 'wax drip' finish or got it from Carlo Scotti I don't know.

I have read they were the first carvers of the Castello Epoca wax drips. Of course the first Epoca had a finish that looked like hewn rock, rare but I've got one and will post a pic eventually. Then there was one that looked like shingles on a roof, or so I am told. Never have seen one of those. Anyway ..........

There are 5 or 6 within 50 miles or so Jimmy. None to get very excited about. Their primary business is cigars. They are nice shops and do offer pipes and pipe tobacco's. Most of them just carry blends that they make up themselves. The customer base is young up and comers like attorneys, accountants and IT guys. California tobacco taxes are so high they are scary.

I stick with the ease of net ordering where prices are much better and their is a very wide variety available.

I'm blessed to live in a town with two b&m pipe tobacco shops. The first being in business since 1926 and the other got opened few years ago. And you find decent pipe tobaccos from many grogery stores or super markets. With the decent i mean Petes, Gawiths, Solanis etc, not only Amphoras, Clans, Hamiltons, Kilta whick you can get everywhere.
Of course the selection in those local b&m shops isn't so great but i think it is important to support them with the brands they have.

Another not so bad choice is to visit Estonia (about 4 hrs from where i live) or Poland (1 hr flight from my home town). They have pipe tobacco shops with huge selections.
